Requiem for a dream

You know it's funny, but things sometimes just come to mind.  Take a new story.

I was studying with Howard Shore's LOTR soundtrack and the TT trailer soundtrack; "Lux Aeterna (Requiem for a Dream)" came on. If your not familiar with this piece, you may have heard it before, according to the Wikipedia, it's been covered by lots of movies, games, and TV shows.

However, I must admit, "Requiem for a tower" (the only version I could find on Youtube that sounds clear) - the official LOTR: TTT trailer soundtrack is like Ray Charles "Georgia", it is THE version of the song. None have ever come close!

Anyway, I was listening to it, and my mind drifted all over the place, and finally, it latched upon a story. I got the idea of say a general, on his deathbed. He lead the biggest army in history, against the invasion of Earth by an unknown interstellar race. But because of what the general went though, he has been racked by post traumatic stress disorder so severe as to keep him institutionalized since the end of the war.

I see it, as the day of his passing comes. He's visited by an angel (which only he can see and hear). The angel shows him what he's lost. Friends, and loved ones because of the war, but the angel assures him,  his whole life had led up to this point.

He continues, showing him other key figures. Ones that survived. Ones that was there helping in other parts of the war. Showing what they lost too. The pain of their loss. He even shows him, the enormous loss of the President of Earth.

Then he's forced to relive the battles, watching his men, women, and even children die. For they had to use suicide bombers against the invader's fleets. The loss of hope, as the invaders gained an upper hand. The great clash of two huge armies.

Then, the incredible courage of two great leaders, both cut down in battle. One pure, one troubled, but who redeemed himself at the very end.  Who they left behind too...

Then finally, the "D Day invasion" the final, great battle, where he lead. zomorph, human, and even the 5 interstellar species allies, to repel the invaders.

At the VERY end, he passes away, but just the moment before, in that moment, he experiences the peace he wanted for years. All the pain and misery that he has experienced by what he had to do in the war was lifted from his soul.

Yes, there's some LOTR in it, you can't help that. But I think it is far past Tolkin's masterpiece as to not make me seem like a plagiarizer :)

That's something that just may be written. Such a powerful story tends to build up in my mind till it floods the word processor.  Hell, I may even use the name 'Requiem for a dream' for according to what I found,  a 'requiem' is:

Requiem

1 : a mass for the dead
2 a : a solemn chant (as a dirge) for the repose of the dead b : something that resembles such a solemn chant
3 a : a musical setting of the mass for the dead b : a musical composition in honor of the dead

"requiem." Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. 2010.

Merriam-Webster Online. 6 April 2010

Whooo...that was needed :)

story, requiem for a dream, lotr, terrafur
