Last week of classes for the school year is over! (There's still one week of school left before the year is over, but subject teachers don't teach that week.)
Not so bad with the 4th and 5th graders, since I'll see them in March again for the new school year, but today was the last time I will ever teach the 6th graders. :( I'll miss a lot of them... I'll probably still see most of them once in a while, since they're going to the middle school literally next door to our school, but some of them are going to schools farther away, and I'll probably never see them again. :(
I decided to celebrate the last week of classes by just letting them relax and teaching/showing some English pop songs. Including, yes, Mr. Justin Bieber. And Taylor Swift.
Funnily enough, all of the 6th graders knew who Bieber was, but the 4th and 5th graders had no idea. I kind of introduced him quickly, then put on the "Baby" mv. Cue a collective dreamy sigh from all the girls, in EVERY class. A lot of them propped their chins on their hands and watched, starry-eyed. One of my 4-1 girls, who might be my favorite student in the entire school, turned to me after the video ended. She was BEAMING and pink-faced and giddy, and went, "Teacher, he's a really, really good singer! ^___^" Lol and my first reaction was, "Oh, honey, I can guarantee it's not his singing that you like so much."
Everyone liked the "Somebody to Love" mv a lot, and was SUPER SHOCKED AND AMAZED when I pointed out Rino and said that she'd made a lot of the dances for Soshi and SHINee and f(x). I love being able to make English relevant to things they know and are interested in. :3
I taught the 6th graders Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" and showed them the music video after, which they LOVED. All of them freaked out at the kiss scene at the end and hid their faces; I saw a couple of boys peek between their fingers, lol. A couple of the 6-1 boys went, "Wahhhh" in awe when Taylor Swift's "nerdy" character came to the prom in the end in the white dress, haha.
And I got my 5th graders to rock out to Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold", which was all sorts of amazing. The chorus was way too fast for them at first, but they started to get it after a while, since I told them it was all about opposites, and the words were pretty easy. After they tried singing the song the first time, it was the BOYS who went, "TEACHER! One more time, one more time!" They were so determined about being able to sing it well. ;___; They were WAY louder than the girls, and even got really into singing the verses, since they were slower than the chorus. Hearing a bunch of 5th grade boys singing in the high, breathy falsetto of the verses of Hot N Cold was just about the cutest thing ever, and I REALLY wish I'd recorded it somehow. ;~;
To sum it up, classes were awesome this week, and I wish I got to do this with them more often.
