Television

So here's the deal. Rogers communications are the people who provide cable the condo my parents (and I for the time being) live at. They decided to give us these fancy new cable box thingies. I don't recall what they're called in actuality right now and I'm too lazy to get up and check. But they came in today and installed one on each TV set. Now we have 600 channels. Sort of.

We have the CBC. We're getting it from the East coast, the prairies, the Pacific coast and somewhere in the Yukon. Because I've always wanted to hear the local news reports from the Yukon territory. And then there's the double and triplicate channels. Why we need to have Newsworld twice I do not know. Why we need MTV Canada twice I don't know. It's like half the new channels we got are simply the same ones we already had only they have a higher number on them. We have Ontario legislature television and Sportsnet from all sorts of places. We have the Bluejays channel. Which is one of the silliest things ever invented.

Then there are what I am calling the radio station channels for lack of a better term. Basically, they're a series of channels that do nothing but display a silly-looking blue patterned background, play a track from a CD and display the information on it. Title, artist, CD, production company, etc. There's a pop music channel, an adult contemporary channel, a French top forty channel, classic hits of the 70s one French one English, Hits of the 80s in French and English, Country, classic country, French country (who knew?), folk, jazz, light jazz, blues, crooners, popular classical, Baroque, chamber music, "Masterworks," world music, childrens' singers . . .

There are more that I can't recall now, but it's amazing. On the plus side, we're finally getting the WB. Naturally a couple years to late for me. Where was this when I wanted to catch Buffy?

And now we have features.

Like the ability to check the listings with the click of a button on the remote. Or to see a summary of an episode that way. My mother, the household technophobe, is living in fear of touching the new remotes. We have to be careful to remember to set up the television just right so that she won't get confused by it.

Now maybe some of you have all this. Bully for you. But I have to wonder what need anyone has for duplicate channels. Or a station that plays nothing but Francophone country singers. Some of these thing are useful, I don't deny it. But still.

Six hundred channels.

My brain hurts.
