I get that country, regional, provincial, state, city etc. etc. governments all want to increase tourism. Really I do. But do the ads always have to be so . . . stupid?
There's a new movement in Canadian tourism to get Canadians to drop off tourist dollars around the country. Visit the West or East Coast, Alberta . . . whatever. So why is it that the ads have to stink so much? The first one I saw involved a woman pretending to be French. Like France French, not Quebec French. And she yaps about how she wishes there were whales in the Seine. That was dumb. Then there was the one where the supposedly Egyptian chick tells us that she thinks Canada is exotic and we're lucky to live there. The thing is, she sounds like an anglophone Canadian pretending to have a middle eastern accent. Which is silly. Because then it just sounds like a Government of Canada sponsored thing. With the budget to match. The latest one I caught has a guy, supposedly Italian, standing in front of a bluescreened Coliseum and saying, get this, "You should be happy to be in a country with so much history."
I'm sorry what?
The Italian guy is telling me that I'm lucky to be somewhere (ie Canada) with so much history?
While standing in front of the Coliseum in Rome (apparantly)?
What planet are these people from?
