FAVORITE TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS SET IN THE 1880s AND 1890s
1. "The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr." (1993-1994) - Bruce Campbell starred in this original television series about a Harvard-educated lawyer who becomes a bounty hunter in 1893 California, following the death of his father. Created by Jeffrey Boam and Carlton Cuse, the series co-starred Christian Clemenson and Julius Carry.
2. "Jack the Ripper" (1988) - Michael Caine starred in this award winning depiction of Scotland Yard's hunt for Britain's most infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper. Directed by David Wickes, the two-part miniseries co-starred Jane Seymour and Lewis Collins.
3. "The Alienist" (2018-2020) - Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning starred in this adaptation of Caleb Carr's novels about an alienist (psychiatrist) who helps the New York Police Department track down serial killers in late 19th century New York City.
4. "Timestalkers" (1987) - William Devane and Lauren Hutton starred in this adaptation of Ray Brown's novel, "The Tintype"; a story about a widowed college professor who becomes involved with a time traveler from 2586, who needs his help in tracking down a fugitive from her time period. The television movie was directed by Michael Shultz.
5. "Sherlock Holmes" (1984-1994) - Jeremy Brett starred in this television adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels. Created by John Hawkesworth, the series co-starred David Burke and Edward Hardwicke, who both portrayed Dr. John Watson.
6. "Penny Dreadful" (2014-2016) - Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Harnett star in this horror-drama series about a group of people who battle the forces of supernatural evil in Victorian England. Created by John Logan.
7. "The Crucifer of Blood" (1991) - Charlton Heston portrayed Sherlock Holmes in this adaptation of Paul Giovanni's 1978 play, which was an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's 1890 novel, "The Sign of Four". Directed by Fraser Clarke Heston, the television movie co-starred Richard Johnson as Dr. John Watson.
8. "Young Maverick" (1979-1980) - Charles Frank starred in this television sequel to the 1957-1962 television series, "Maverick". Developed by Juanita Bartlett, the series co-starred Susan Blanchard and guest-starred James Garner.
9. "Buffalo Soldiers" (1997) - Danny Glover starred in this television movie about African-American Army soldiers and their roles in the Apache Wars. Directed by Charles Haid, the movie starred Mykelti Williamson and Tom Bower.
10. "Tipping the Velvet" (2002) - Rachael Stirling and Keeley Hawes starred in this adaptation of Sarah Waters' 1998 novel about a young woman and the three loves of her life in late Victorian England. The miniseries was adapted by Andrew Davies and directed by Geoffrey Sax.
