mission completed

well all my work is finished and handed in which is good.
i can now be lazy with a purpose :) although my current main agendas are sorting out the film and photography society for next yr, tidying this room and practising guitar/jamming with a friend.
i've just bought a sexy 8mm movie camera (will be one of many) dated from 1958 i think (might be 1960), plus dads on the look out for more 35mm and medium format cameras for me. i should get quite a collection for next yr. my friends just brought a production/movie quality video camera so we're gonna start making short films as soon as it arrives (just for practise nothing special). over summer im gonna start my hand at screenwriting again whern im not busy. my friend hasnt got back to me yet so looks like im going abroad alone for a while. meant to be seeing john next week but im gonna put it on hold till mid june i think as im v.poor atm.
I've recently been to the cinema quite a lot to see a vast array of films, mainly for fun. suprising to say all of them were dissapointing or just rubbish aside from one of them.

Amityville Horror - well 'based on a true story' always makes me chuckle at the start of horror films. it was actually based on the 1979 film and then updated. not much to say about this aside form shoddy acting, shoddy plot, useless horror qualities (no1 dies, rubbish!!). for some reason it resembled the remake of 13 ghosts to me, even had a classic book reading section where they'd read a book then the image in the book would be shown as the main character is walking through the room. this film wasnt really funny bad which i was hoping, it was just plain bad bad. although i did see at the start of it a trailer for house of wax, now that looks like prime funny bad entertainment (one of the quotes there "this house is actually made of wax!!" classic).

The Jacket - I was quite interested in going to see this before it came out. i read up a little on it and found out it would be a similar experience to these new 'genreless films' such as donnie darko, the machinist etc etc etc. i'd say they were 'psychological mortality overviews' or something like that. anyway you have your suspense in there when you dont know whats happening to him, a sense of thrill as he realises how long he has left to live. a nice psychiactric ward for the criminally insane to make things a bit more unsettling and also actors that fit their roles perfectly. overal the acting and cinematography was pretty good in this although the ending was a bit weak (i cant say anything as it would give away the ending). plus all the way through the 'love' part of the film it made me wonder if he was a secret paedofile or just forgot that some1 was actually just an 8 yr old girl. Anyway this was the best film i've been to see at the cinema for a while but its no machinist by a long shot (i reccomend everyone see that).

Kingdom of Heaven - well Ridley Scott has really gone down hill since the Alien films. Gladiator was redeeming and actually a good film, i'd even go as far as saying using new techniques and lighting styles to really aid the film lots and it worked. the strange thing is all those exactly the same techniques (yes nothing new here) fail to work in this film as all the way through we feel emotionless for all characters. the style instead of aiding this film just gets annoying ('some1 dies, best have a slow motion for that and slow music in battle scenes and the really annoying slow motion with the frame rate that just looks bad). Some scenes were just downright cheesy, one scene in particular in which Balian (orlando bloom) has ordered a unique tactic to take down siege towers. Both him and the enemy general (who are at least 100-200 metres away) give each other a nod as suddenly they can see each other close up. Also if you are going to watch the film you'll find yourself saying 'huge siege towers wouldnt move that fast'. overall dissapointing although liam neesons acting is pretty good. If you're an orlando fan then as usual orlando plays orlando like he does in every film.

Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith - Well which star wars fan wasnt waiting for this? Most of you that are fans will have seen this by now (even those that arent fans i hear :P). I'm gonna do a v.short review of this as its so easy to pick this one apart. Firstly i'd say yes it was entertaining. Secondly it was funny in places it wasnt meant to be funny (darth vader going 'nooooooooooooooooo' is a classic moment). I liked the way the other jedis that werent the lead characters died pretty intantly. General greivous was a poor character, i was really looking foreward to his character. he was known as a jedi killer which is where he got his sabres from yet his fighting was pretty weak. one technique he uses (kind of like a lawnmower on its side) was actually working so what does hedo? he stops. typical, we cant go killing the lead characters can we. I did like the use of different sabre styles although it was used limitedly (obi-wan has a new one i see which he used to kill greivous). Also Anakins 'fall' to the dark side lasted o what 5 mins? Aside from all his questions he had and confusion it was instantly 'yes i'll be your student'. So anyway, entertaining yet still dissapointing. I'd say all 3 had their good bits and their rubbish bits, pity it was mainly rubbish bits in all of them.

Finally a dvd i watched last night

American Splendor - a film based on a popular underground comic which is based on a real guy who's in the film (confusing, not really im just bad at explaining lol). I really liked this film, probably the best film i've seen in a while. excellent style and acting. plus the real characters are in there doing the narration and interviews. i thought it was a touching film with some very funny bits in as well as deeply moving bits. i recommend everyone to buy/see this film. nice short review there as it can speak for itself that film. me and my friend are going to have a look for the comic books today.

i've also recently seen Elephant which I also think worthy of buying yet im not going to give anything away for that aside from excellent choreography, shocking and moving and nice direction. the characters feel real and we can relate to some of them. i know most of you dont take my advice but the previous 2 films i've mentioned i really suggest you find them out and watch them.

anyway im off back to tidying and thinking how much this essay is wasted on a thing that nobody reads.

bye
