Fanmix: The Autumn Midway

Oct 07, 2011 14:23

Fall is my favorite time of year. I'd already made a Halloween mix last year, and this year I wanted to do a more generic fall mix. Please click below to check it out!

Every autumn, the fair came to Huntsville. It wasn't fancy. There were about six rides, and the booths consisted of games, entertainment, and various farmers' prize fruits, vegetables, and livestock. I went to the fair several times in high school, and each time was a mixture of excitement, annoyance, and thrill. The fair was dirty. It smelled. A lot of rednecks came out to throw up overpriced beer in the bushes underneath the soaring ferris wheel. The ground was dusty. My socks were orange for weeks. I liked that the fair didn't check IDs all that religiously (nevermind that at the time I hated beer, but getting it was required. It was the principle of the matter). The rides were mostly lame, but it was a tradition: we went anyway.

During the day, the fair was too hot, too full of kids, and too dry. The magic always happened at sunset, though. Somehow chipped paint turned from cheap to promising. Laughter transformed from giggles to full-throated cackles with a candy-coated menace. The air cooled down, and I needed that hoodie I'd tied around my waist. Kettle corn could be enjoyed with hard apple cider. That haunted house that had barely earned a second-glance earlier now burst with ghosts. Each person had a knowing smile on their face, like they saw me delighting in the creepy way that the sun faded like a bloodstain against the night sky, and darkness swallowed the midway.

This mix is designed to mimic that feeling. "Sunset" starts off at a frenetic, fun-filled pace. The carousel spins. People laugh and delight in the cooler air. You've got your friends at your side and no one's too tipsy yet and the orange light is just bright enough to see Ryan slip off with Tracy and you think really? Really? But it was the fair, so it was okay. Everyone's a little drunk off the magic.

But then the sun sets earlier than you're used to. It's dark. Lights from the football stadium have come on, suicidal bugs coating the glow in buzzing swarms. You hear screams coming from the haunted house, more than you're used to. You remember that it's nearing the witching hour, right? That's midnight, and it's coming. "Dark" is designed to be the comedown after the sugar-rush of "Sunset" - eerie, colder, and just a little bit spooky.
