ANOTHER MORE STUFF

I've noticed that I've been buying a ton of movies lately. Moreso that I had previously. Then again, DVDs are getting cheaper these days.

Waiting DVD
I wanted to see this when it was in the theaters but I never got around to it. Overall it was a pretty funny flick. It definitely had its moments. I think I was expecting it to have the same impact on my as when I watched Clerks. Then again, I've never had to wait tables.

I watched the making-of documentaries as well. Rob McKittrick (the director) comes across like a wanna-be Kevin Smith. Watching his interviews kind of annoyed me. Strange.

Van Wilder DVD
Best Buy had a special where if you bought Waiting and Van Wilder together, it was 2 for $20. Since Waiting was $16.99, I figured I might as well fork over the extra $3. I still haven't watched Van Wilder yet. Will do this weekend.

The Monkees Head DVD
The Monkees' one and only full length movie. When I was in 6th grade I went through a major Monkees phase. Their 20th anniversary was happening and they started showing their TV show again. I saw Head back then and (of course) didn't get it at all. It just seemed like an even more psychedelic extended episode of the TV show. I didn't get any of the symbolism of the film. So I bought this to try to dissect the movie. Basically, the whole movie is about how the Monkees try to escape from their teen-idol past. But no matter how hard they try to do so, they always end up trapped in a box only to go through the process over and over again. In the end, the only way to finally escape is to "commit suicide." But even after that, they end up back in the box.

I read somewhere that they wrote the movie during a potsmoking session.

Jandek On Corwood DVD
More on "the guy who released 45+ albums." This was a pretty good documentary. I think the filmmakers did a good job trying to solve the mystery of Jandek. But that's not to say that they actually solved it. However, the information and the interviews provided a lot of insight on Jandek and his music. I definitely want to go out and get more Jandek albums.

Mono/Worlds End Girlfriend Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain CD
I finally bit the bullet and order this Japan-only album. Mono's US label, Temporary Residence, is planning on releasing this album in the States but not until September. Fuck if I was gonna wait that long. So I just ordered off of Amazon.

This album is way more mellow and quieter than any Mono previous album. In fact, the dynamics are pretty steady. There aren't any big crashing guitar swells. The WEG string arrangements are great yet spooky. This isn't really something that I would be listening to with the lights off. It's really eerie but yet still appealing. I definitely want to go out and get more WEG albums at some point. It's just that I know it'll be expensive because they haven't released anything in the States.
