HAUL'D ADDED

Jun 24, 2005 18:55

Um, okay, I went a little hogwild at Amoeba today. I spent around $115 on stuff.
Guess who has buyers' remorse now. Well, not really. But I really should not have spent all that money...

Well, regardless of it all, here's the haul...

The Bazaars I Want You Dead 7" Single
I have no idea what this band sounds like. I think I heard or saw the name the name somewhere. The cover looked interesting. Total impulse buy and I'm just hoping that it was worth the $4.

Bloc Party Little Thoughts e.p. Japanese CD e.p.
My weekly Bloc Party purchase. (Yeah, I know the joke is getting old.) I'd actually been waiting quite a while to get this. Coincidentally, I had ordered this CD earlier this morning from HMV. I hopes that Amoeba would actually bring it in had diminished. Imagine my surprise when I saw this on the shelves! My main reason for buying this is that this is the only place one can get uncompressed (ie non-mp3) versions of the vinyl only b-sides: Storm and Stress and Skeleton. Again, the anti-climaticism that prevails in my life appears--I have the CD now. Woo.

Pulp Ultimate Live DVD
I didn't even know this had been released. (Thankfully, it only came out this past week in the UK) They finally released the two Pulp concert videos: F.E.E.L.I.N.G C.A.L.L.E.D L.I.V.E and The Park Is Mine on one DVD. The videos highlight the tours did for their Different Class and This Is Hardcore. FEELING was filmed at Brixton Academy while Park... was filmed at Finsbury Park. FEELING is definitely one of my favorite concert videos ever. This was Pulp at their peak. I believe it was recorded just after they came back the US tour. All the hits are there as well as 6 short tour films. Park... pretty much concentrates on material from This Is Hardcore. But it's still worth it for the live versions of A Little Soul and the one-two punch of Glory Days and Common People. The overall package kind of leaves something to be desired but it's still cool to have these videos in a digital format. Now I can trade in my VHS versions!

The Departure Dirty Words CD
The more I listen to The Departure, the more I heard traces of both Duran Duran and Echo and the Bunnymen. In fact, if nenax heard them, she'd probably really like them seeing as she's a massive fan of both bands. They have that disco/new wavey thing that is the trend but at least the singer (David Jones--no, not Davy Jones) doesn't have the whiny voice. The Duran-y bass lines are there. As are the signature new wave sixteenth note hi-hat patterns on the drums. Their first single, All Mapped Out has and still receives much play on my iPod. Lump In My Throat just totally reminds me of the Bunnymen. Not vocally but musically. It reminds me of The Cutter or something.

Funeral For A Friend Hours CD/DVD
This actually came out domestically. However, Atlantic in the US didn't care to release the bonus DVD in the States soooo I had to order the UK pressing. It's a definite progression from their debut album Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation. If you don't like the current wave of US emo bands like Thrice and Taking Back Sunday and other shit like that. You will not like FFAF. It's a wonder that I like FFAF because I fucking despise bands like Thrice and TBS. Well, it's just that Brit bands are cooler than US even though they pretty much rip off US bands theory that I hold so dearly in my heart. My favorite songs at the moment is the lead single, Streetcar and Alvarez (or as it was formerly known as with the working title, Airwolf, due to it's simlarity in sound to the theme song to the TV show of the same name.)

Pixies Surfer Rosa
Pixies Doolittle
Pixies Bossanova
Pixies Trompe Le Monde
Alright, so this is what brought the purchases from $50 to $115. In Japan, the latest trend is to reissue "classic" albums in what they call miniature LP format. In other words, they repackage the album like the original vinyl pressing but in, you guessed it, miniature LP form. They have the same inserts and booklets as the original vinyl pressings but only smaller. And since they are Japanese imports, they usually cost bank. Brand new, the Pixies reissues are about $25 a pop. However, I Amoeba had all four albums in their used bin (although they clearly weren't "used"), for $14.99 a piece. Needless to say, I couldn't resist. I have the miniature LP reissues of Blur's Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur and 13 so I needed to add the Pixies reissues to the collection. Now, I'll l have to order the Mogwai mini LP CDs. Damnit!

And of course, there's the music. Both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are classic indie rock. And the cooler thing is that the Surfer Rosa reissue includes the Come On Pilgrim e.p. If I get $4 for my Pixies CDs that I'm planning on trading in, then having initially spent $65 for these reissues won't be that bad.

UPDATE ON THE LOST PACKAGE

I'm still waiting for my lost package to show. The store I ordered it from won't "investigate" until 30 days after the initial ship date, which was June 9. So now, all I can do is wait. The CDs in said package include the full length CD from The Tears, the new Raging Speedhorn album, a Razorlight concert DVD, the new Ordinary Boys single and my (hopefully, signed) 7" single for FFAF's Streetcar. I want my stuff, damnit!!!!!

pulp, pixies, bazaars, bloc party, departure, funeral for a friend
