Gruff, that was the one word that anyone would choose to describe him as. It really was.
But Jim Brass just sat there looking both interested and bored, listening to Gil and Catherine banter back and forth, and interjecting his opinion when he could.
"I'll bid you two adieu now, as I have to work a double tomorrow."
Catherine tipped an imaginary hat to him and grabbed his hand as he passed by. Brass simply nodded his goodbye as Gil moved through the people to the exit of the bar.
Catherine and Jim were left to glance at each other over the rims of their glasses. It wasn't uncomfortable, but then again, there was nothing to suggest an air of passivity.
Eventually, she spoke. She was just so very good at breaking any silence. "Do you feel like you're missing something Jim?"
“Every damn day I wake up,” he said softly, fingers dancing over the soggy napkin beneath his drink.
She nodded, a sigh escaping her slowly. “Me too…”
Silence reigned again for a few more moments.
"There was a time when I would have had the balls to ask you to dinner, Catherine," he said, pulling long and hard on his drink.
Bringing his lips together as if cringing slightly at the bitterness, she replied, "And there would have been a time when I would have accepted without hesitating," Catherine paused, regarding the glass in her hand as if some kind of secret potion.
"But... that would have been another time,” he supposed. “And another lie.”
"You want to invent a new lie, Jim? Something that you can build upon?"
Draining his glass, he stood up, shaking his head sadly. "Nah, maybe find a reality that I can call my own." He tossed a crumpled fifty down on the table and without a backward glance walked away.
