When they backed away, Sam knew.
It wasn’t when the nurse’s blood spilled on him; then, there was still hope. He felt no different.
He’d been immune to the Croatoan virus - why not this too?
When they pinned him to the wall, still he held on to hope. It was three against one, but he’d beaten worse odds. Way worse.
But when they let go and backed away, he knew. In that instant, hope vanished.
His legs gave way and he crumpled to the floor, sick at the realization.
He was infected. He was rabid.
He was one of them.
