Read the article on the front page of today's Trib titled "The Bride was 7." Then try complaining about your life.
This little girl was betrothed to a stranger 10 years older. Her father, a cheap scumbag who cares more about money than his children, also married off her older sister and her two teenage brothers at the same time, so he wouldn't lose more money on separate ceremonies. Tihun was pulled out of school, which her father didn't like in the first place. Let's see...what was I doing when I was 7? I was in second grade, and didn't even like boys for another year. She would probably be dead from too early childbirth or AIDS in 10 years.
And who is pushing this horrendous crime to be committed? THE CHURCH. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, to be exact. That is rather different from what the Catholic Church teaches, or maybe it really isn't. The Catholics say not to have sex before marriage. Other than that, they don't really specify on what age one should be married at (to my own knowledge. I'm sure it varies in different places). Ah, but in Ethiopia, they say that girls should be married before age 15, how old Mary was when she gave birth to Jesus. But of course they don't care that Mary lived a cruel and terrible life, do they? No. Because who cares about women? They sure don't. Jesus did not die for humanities sins- he died because of them. Nothing has changed since his time. Girls in other African countries are being married by this raping process. A man, and not very old either, will choose a little girl, abduct her, rape her, and, ta da, she is now his bride.
One girl actually did something about this. She got a gun. That is not murder, that is community service. Not all life is precious- there are people who deserve to die and nothing they can do will make up for all their crimes. God is not all forgiving. It is wrong to be all forgiving, and no amount of praying would ever save their souls.
A hospital in Addis Ababa cares for women who have problems because of too early childbirth. They are the saddest cases I have ever heard of.
I don't think women's rights is getting a female president in office. I think that it is stopping this injustice for little girls.
