There's two things that have been bothering me a bit recently. The first is the song "Fake It" by Seether. It's been on the radio a lot around here, and the more I hear it, the more I dislike it. What bothers me the most is the chorus which goes like this:
"Good god your comin up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
SO FOLLOW ME DOWN"
What's been getting under my skin is the "I feel so raped" bit. Maybe it's just me, but in the context of the rest of the song, rape seems to be treated rather flippantly. In my mind, that almost mocks the experiences of rape victims, and desensitizes people to rape.
The second thing that's been bothering me a bit is the recent Jimmy John's commercials. In them, a man talks about admiring a girl who works for Jimmy John's making sandwiches. It starts out a little unusual, but nothing too bad. Eventually, the man says that he's going to marry that girl, and if she won't agree, she'll be "sorry. Very, very sorry." I feel that that pretty much blows right past the line. It makes me a bit uncomfortable to hear it, and the first time I heard it, I was actually stunned for a few seconds. If it's an attempt at humor, it missed the mark by a wide margin.
So, reader participation time: Do you think my concerns are legit, or do you think I'm over reacting?
