Last weekend my mom called to tell me that my Grandma in LA is starting hospice care. They discovered a tumour in her lung about 6 months ago and it has been getting harder for her to breathe. They think it is cancerous (she smoked for years but quit when I was a kid), but she is too frail for chemotherapy and her attitude is that if they arent't going to treat it, then she doesn't want to go through a biopsy.

Since they aren't sure how long she has, we thought it was best to get out and see her while she was still lucid and fairly active. She's 93 and has deteriorated a lot since we saw her last May. She's using a walker to walk and has lost quite a bit of weight. She's had a good life and is very well taken care of but it is still hard to see her nearing the end of her life. She was such an influence in my life and I'm still very close to her. We've never had "the gay talk" but when she leaned over to Erik and I at my cousin's wedding and said "I suppose you two are next" I knew she knew. It was even more amazing that at age 92, she traveled to MN for our wedding and proudly displays our wedding picture taken with her in her apartment with all the other family photos.

I'm really glad we got to see her and will probably try to go out there as I am able to over the next few months as she gradually fades, but it was pretty emotionally draining. Today I just wanted to hibernate and be introverted so I'm currently skipping out on the hayride and bonfire outing with the church folks and missing my hubby while I watch bad TV.
