So week one is now into the books, and here I sit planning for this coming week. While doing that, I have taken the time to reflect on what is going on down in Louisianna, like many people are. Last year I was in Florida during hurricane season, and had the dubious honor of experiencing multiple hurricanes. While Hurricane Charlie did much damage around where I was living, it was nothing like what happened down in New Orleans. I remember going days without electricity or running water. Of course, many relief organizations were on hand and provided food and water to those who needed it. I find it difficult to believe that our current administration, who was in office when the hurricanes went through Florida last summer, took so long to respond this time. I believe that within 24 hours, the white house had commented on the devistation, promised aid, and maybe even was on the way to visit. It's amazing to me that it would take so long for President Bush to come to the aid of those living in horrible conditions in New Orleans. I am no fan of the president in the first place, but that's because I disagree with his politics. Looking back, I realize that his trips to Florida were part of a political ploy. He needed to win the state. It was going to be important in the election last fall. Also, the areas affected in Florida were more affluent than those in New Orleans. How can anyone who has the power to help just stand by and watch as mothers have to try to care for their children while moving about around the dead? How could there not have been faster action to get people out of the Silver Dome when the plumming, air condidtioning don't work and there is no food or water coming in for those there to survive on? I believe that Texas stepped up to the plate big time, and may have offered more the begin with than did our federal government. It's a sad day when our government decides that there still are second class citizens and make the decision on how fast to get involved based on that opinion. I understand that there are the haves and the have nots in this country. I taught some of the haves while in CT and right now some of my students are the have nots. I think it is time that our government paid more attention to what is wrong with our country instead of going out to other countries to try to "fix" them.
