banned books in Caney anonymous September 28 2005, 20:57:10 UTC
When I was in high school, a ladies' club operated the town's library, and it was located in the library room at the high school. Books were kept separate, but high school kids could check out the club's books if they desired; however, the high school librarian, a tall, prunish looking and acting woman, felt compelled to act as censor and keep some of the club's books hidden on a shelf by her desk. One such book was titled "Fair Stood the Wind for France," and was a noted WWII novel. It had some racy segments, or they were considered so at that time, and it was off-limits to students. I was a library aide and managed to sneak it out and read it. Only "banned book" I ever read. It would be quite innocuous by today's standards, but I felt rather daring in avidly reading its pages.
