Medication Blues

Orange and white,
with a little stripe
a score with which
to break the whole in half
before this breaks your heart.
It’s always the first to go.

The mind follows
soon after
and they say it
won’t last forever,
something has to give.

It’s a race for survival
without any running,
you’d never have the energy
for that sort of thing.

There’s different meds
for different days,
and more than one way
to tackle the problem,
but if it takes too long,
it could be too late.

It’s a race
and sometimes
you’re running backwards.

Just keep taking the pills,
the colours,
keep you breathing,
keep your heart beating,
even if they don’t
keep you alive.
