Ahh, I see what you're getting at. Okay, the far more universal popularity of the show as opposed to the more "cultish" series did enable it to have a much wider impact on the population at large. It did take over a decade, the changeover to another generation, and the release of the movies before it became that popular, however. In its day, Trek was very, very much a cult show.

Largely being in the right place with a certain vision at the right time, as with most things that have some enduring historical impact, makes a huge difference.

Yep, Buffy would be the closest, IMO. And that too may take another generation before its effects become more noticeable.

While BtVS may have an influence on future generations as to feminism, for me the feminist aspects were a subset of a greater philosophical shift to the ways humans deal with power and influence as regards other humans. I see this as especially important what with recent decades' political and social trends toward reinforcing strict, traditional vertical hierarchies that give a great deal of power to a few and less and less to everyone else.

Whatever effect BtVS had or will have on society as a whole, I can very clearly see its effects in other media, particularly television, anywhere from a cult show like The 100 to a mainstream, popular show like The Good Wife.
