Marvel fan-casting, East Asian edition

Oct 28, 2013 00:40

I posted this on Tumblr a couple of weeks back and forgot to cross-post to DW/LJ. It's nothing fancy, just something I put it together because while I'm glad for Lucy Liu as Joan Watson on Elementary, one of the two lead characters of a mainstream show, and for other Asian ladies filling out the ranks of ensembles, there still needs to be way more Asians in our media. Hence the fan-casting.

I've tried to be patient with Joss and Marvel, because hey--at least they cast two Chinese women in Agents of SHIELD. But it's disheartening that we have to keep waiting for the MCU to actually be *better* at writing race, because it just doesn't seem to be happening. And Joss hasn't really done much to make amends for Firefly.

So, here are some East Asian characters that have been, or could be, included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Agent of SHIELD; Chloe Bennet as Skye
Rinko Kikuchi as Janet van Dyne, aka Wasp; Osric Chau as Amadeus Cho
John Cho as Jimmy Woo, Agent of SHIELD; Lucy Liu as Rumiko Fujikawa
Jamie Chung as Colleen Wing; Hideo Muraoka as Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist

I considered casting Rinko Fujikawa as Rumiko, so a Japanese actress could play a Japanese character, but ages didn't work for me. Also, I think that MCU!Jan would be younger and less experienced than 616!Jan. She'd be closer to Steve's age than Tony's, more like her Ultimates or EMH counterpart than 616.
