Update!

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted! Tumblr has been keeping me occupied, mostly because it's easier to hit reblog on the pretty pretty fanart than it is to think of something original to share in a DW/LJ post. But I miss talking to all of you and feeling actually engaged in fandom, and so I'm going to do my best to post more, even if my updates aren't any more interesting than, "School sucks and I still haven't found a job."

To encourage myself to post more, I've updated my layouts on both Dreamwidth and LiveJournal. They're very... Marvel. Heh. It's sad to move on from Stargate fandom, but that's just not where my focus is right now. We'll always have Atlantis!

You can see them here: Dreamwidth is Fury in IM2 and LiveJournal is Jane/Thor. The LJ one was designed by scholarslayouts, but I've tweaked it. I really really REALLY would love a rotating PHP banner, but I can't figure out how to upload my PHP file to a free web-hosting site. Every free site I've signed up for comes with its own modules and pre-formatted layouts, and don't allow me to just upload a bunch of random files into a folder and link to them. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? Is there an easier way to do this?

Real life stuff:
My Ottawa trip at the end of July was quite nice--short and rushed, but I got to see some truly fantastic aboriginal art at the National Gallery and go for a boat ride and see that burlesque show for Planned Parenthood, so I was happy. (I enjoyed the museums but I still prefer the ROM to the Ottawa museums--the latter are a bit too kid-focused for my taste.) The burlesque show was... awkward at first? I didn't know anyone and clearly everyone else was connected with the PP clinic, so I mostly sat with my Coke and read Tamora Pierce at the end of the bar until it was showtime. The dancers were local amateurs/enthusiasts, I think, except one performer--she was the second act of the first half, before intermission, and the final act of the evening. I vaguely recall her stage name being Rhapsody Blue? She was good, completely unselfconscious, and she had a great routine that got the crowd cheering and energized. The third act of the night was also awesome, but in a different way--she danced to a medley of Firefly songs. She invited the audience to sing along to "You Can't Take the Sky From Me" and I'd estimate a good half of the crowd knew all the words, including me. It was very, very geeky. *g*

Hmm, what else? My friend from Halifax visited about a week ago and it was nice to take time off to spend with her and our other high school friend and her three kids. I wish we could have gotten together more than just the twice during her week home, but obviously her family wanted the bulk of her time!

Went to a work-related barbecue at my boss' house on Friday to celebrate the end of summer. We have this week off, then the new students move to part-time in September. Technically I'm also required to "volunteer" on a part-time basis throughout the school year, but ideally it shouldn't be more than a couple of hours a week, unless I'm gearing up for a hearing. The biggest downside is having to miss classes--I'm already scheduled to miss a day of school in our first week back. Still, I have really enjoyed my year-and-a-bit of clinical experience and don't regret choosing a more hands-on approach to learning.

Alas, I won't be living on campus this year due to a high number of first year students applying for on-campus housing. First years get priority, which means I get to commute. It'll be cheaper in the long run, but will also mean waking up earlier for those 8:30am classes! Ah well, it might encourage me to go to bed before midnight.

The job-hunting is... not going well. Yeah, I'll see how much I can get done this week, since work is done.

How's everyone spending their last week of summer?
