Steve/Tony and Steve/Sharon

I've never heard of Anthony Mackie before, but I'm glad that Sam Wilson is being included in Captain America 2. I'm also hearing rumours that Sharon Carter has been cast? Or it's simply been announced that she's being included in the movie? Well, I had assumed she would be so no surprise there. Unfortunately it seems that the shipping wars have already started up over on Tumblr. Ugh, seriously? I do NOT have time for shipping wars. There are a few Steve/Tony shippers who are bashing Sharon out of hand, and there are a few Sharon-fen who are bashing Steve/Tony shippers out of hand. It's a tar pit of SUCK and I just want to stay the hell out of it.1

Having a non-canon OTP does not mean you need to tear down the canon pairing. Steve/Tony is my OTP, but I also ship them with lots of different characters, both male and female. None of these pairings have anything to do with Steve and Tony's canon het relationships, let's be real. What the hell do I know about Sharon Carter? I haven't read the comics. I'm not going to judge movieverse!Sharon before I've even met her. And if she's anything like Peggy, she'll probably be awesome. And whether I ship movie!Steve/Sharon will depend on a combination of (1) the writing; (2) the acting; (3) the hotness. And let's face it, #3 is pretty damned subjective. MKINYK, YMMV, etc. In any case, the fact that I ship Bruce/Tony has no bearing whatsoever on the fact that I also ship Tony/Rhodey, and the fact that I ship Steve/Peggy has no bearing whatsoever on the fact that I also ship Steve/Howard.

Also, can we please stop bashing female characters for any reason, shipping or otherwise? I'm not saying we can't critique female characters the same as male characters, but let's be clear on our underlying motivations, okay? When we write critiques of a female character, let it be about her, about who she is as a person and a hero. It should be about her relationships and friends, not about how she's a bad girlfriend compared to this other person. It should be about her childhood, her origin story, her victories and failures.

1 Technically, it is not hypocrisy for a Steve/Tony shipper to think Steve/Sharon is creepy because of Steve/Peggy just because Steve and Howard were buddies in WWII. It would only be hypocrisy if they thought that and yet didn't think there was any creep factor in Steve being in love with Tony after being in love with Howard. FYI, I actually ship Steve/Tony and Steve/Howard, but rarely at the same time--and when it's at the same time, I need the characters to be cognizant of the creep factor, okay? Like, it says less about me that I ship these characters than it does about people who think I haven't noticed that it's goddamn creepy and a little incest-y. I'VE NOTICED. Doesn't mean I don't ship it. Okay, NOW I'm staying out of it.
