Wow, I can't believe I haven't updated in almost three weeks! Hey, guys! I haven't been completely offline--I've read some fic and wasted time on Tumblr and it's been pretty much all Avengers, all the time--but it's been a while since I posted anything of consequence.
Work has been very busy, which is good because I feel like I'm learning a lot and hopefully doing some good, but it means my brain doesn't have the processing power left by the end of the day for Dreamwidth/LJ. Also, it's kind of frustrating and a little scary because if it's already this busy and stressful, I don't know how I'll manage in September when I'm doing this *and* part-time school.
Speaking of part-time school, course selection is due on Monday and I still haven't really looked at the course descriptions and schedules and exam dates. Ugh. Well, I'll try to look at it tomorrow because I can't keep leaving things to the last minute.
This is a thing with me, leaving things to the last minute. It hasn't been entirely my fault, I think, that I've been rushing to meet deadlines the past few weeks. When someone else keeps putting you off when you need their input, of course it's hard to meet your own deadlines. But certainly I need to learn to work more efficiently. Smart, not hard, as they say. Also, learning to live with rough drafts being actually *rough*.
But I'm finally taking a day off tomorrow! Originally I'd planned to take a long weekend, maybe five days, so I could take a coach bus to Chicago or Boston or Washington, DC. That was two weeks ago and never got to happen. Instead I'm just taking one day in the middle of the week, just a breather. I'll maybe go to the bank and yell at them for charging me $10 just because the balance in my chequing account dipped below the required amount for like four days. It's not like it didn't go right back up! It's a stupid charge and I want my money back, dammit. Ten bucks is like two frappuccinos and a few quarters in change at Starbucks, you know.
Tonight I had lobster and steak for dinner. Because my mom had bought lobsters on sale, I think? She'd planned to make them for Father's Day dinner, but then we went out instead. I can't remember the last time we had lobster at home! We'll eat them at Chinese banquets, of course, but that's cooked rather differently. This was just plain boiled lobster. What can I say, I like lobster. And steak.
Hmm, what else can I ramble on about? My old university roommate, the guy, is expecting a kid--or rather his wife is expecting a kid. In October, I believe, and it's a boy. My friend's always wanted a girl, interestingly--he figures they're easier to raise than boys--but he'll adapt. I actually heard it first through the mom grapevine, since his mom and my mom are pretty close, but I still acted surprised when they told me. *g*
My high school friend who lives in Halifax is due for a visit at the end of July, beginning of August. That's when I'll take the bulk of my vacation, so we can do things and take the kiddies out. Hopefully it won't be scorching like it is right now. Toronto, why must you give me 40+ °C weather? It hurts my soul. Is anyone else experiencing a heatwave?
The West Wing: If you've never seen this show, I can't recommend it enough. Practically everything I know about American politics I learned from this show. *g* I've been re-watching Season 4 tonight and I just gotta say that it remains my absolute favourite season. Almost every single episode is a gem and the first half of the season is especially strong. After the muck and tension of S3, it's a breath of fresh air. Admittedly, a big part of what I enjoy about S4 is Sam's arc. He's got all this energy, a coherent storyline that I find very compelling--even if it doesn't end how I'd prefer--and it's mostly a result of Rob Lowe leaving the show, true, and I know some fans were bitter at the time, but I came to the show later and reaped the benefits of the storytelling. Plus, I love Will Bailey! And I ship Sam/Will! So Season 4 is kind of automatically my favourite.
Anyway, I just finished disc 1 with Bartlet and Stackhouse in "The Red Mass" talking about the
80-20 rule.
Stackhouse: "That was a wonderful talk, Mr. President."
Bartlet: "Thank you. I didn't write much of it."
Stackhouse: "The 80-20 section."
Bartlet: "That part I wrote. I added it."
Stackhouse: "When you first started, when you talked about how much politicians hunger after the 80-20 issue, I thought, 'My God, I'm about to watch a train wreck. He's going to make a political speech to the Supreme Court while standing in the middle of a church.' But, of course, you didn't. I should have known better. 'Who among the 80 will stand up for the 20?'"
Bartlet: "You did Howard. You did all the time."
Now on to disc 2!
