Avengers Spoiler-Free Zone // Memememe!

Apr 24, 2012 21:49

Please, please do not spoil me for Avengers! I realise that having seen many of the official trailers means that I'm already spoiled for lots of things, but I've tried my best not to read articles or find out gossip or watch any trailers or featurettes put out in the last four weeks. So please, don't post spoilers outside of your cut-tags or, you know, don't post spoilers as a tag. (Apparently some geniuses on Tumblr have been doing that.) I've decided the safest thing is to avoid Tumblr altogether, because people over there are not at all consistent about warning for spoilers. (I feel really badly for people who were trying to avoid spoilers for Young Justice, because it felt like NOBODY was warning or using Read More.)

Meme from
musesfool: Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

DCU

What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I grew up with the Adam West series, the Burton movies, and of course Bruce Timm's Batman: the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, etc. But I didn't jump from Batman Beyond right to Justice League. I vaguely recall running across JL fanfic early on? Te and others were writing GL/Flash (John Stewart/Wally West) and once I realised it was based on a cartoon produced by the same guys who did the Batman and Superman cartoons, I was hooked. Watched all of Justice League, was incensed when they cancelled it in favour of Justice League Unlimited, and then watched the heck out of JLU as well. *g*

Anyway, I started buying comics around the same time. Caught up on a few late 90s, early 2000s arcs through trade paperbacks, started a pull list that lasted until Infinite Crisis. My wallet didn't thank me for those years! Nowadays I stick to trades: there's still plenty of backlog to go through.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
Even if I weren't currently watching Young Justice and anticipating the new Green Arrow TV series, there's little chance I'd ever leave this fandom entirely. It's kind of like Star Trek in that sense? It's omnipresent, even if I'm not immersed in an ongoing show/title. It's an oldie but goodie, something I can revisit whenever I feel nostalgic or bored or experiencing a fannish renaissance.

But I'll admit that Marvel is eating my brain at the moment!

Favourite episodes/books/movies, etc?
The Public Enemies arc of the "pre-slashed for your convenience" Superman/Batman title was a lot of fun. Loved the Dark Arrowette arc in Young Justice. I have a fondness for Kingdom Come and Alex Ross art: The Trust, Peace on Earth, War on Crime, Liberty and Justice. Despite the misogyny, I really enjoyed Identity Crisis--the mystery sucked me in, and Ollie was a terrific narrator. My recent favourites were Red Robin and Batgirl v3.

And obviously the DCAU has my undying devotion.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I've written reviews for the recent movies, for DCAU and Young Justice episodes, and made icons. While I've tried to write fanfic, none of it has ever been finished or posted. (Unless you count my two Smallville ficlets.) I reblog DCU graphics and scans. Um, that's about it!

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
If you'd like my honest opinion? Stay away from DCnU. Pick up old trades. Pick up the Batman: the Animated Series DVDs and work your way through the cartoons. They're a hell of a lot more accessible, and coherent.

But if you're keen on following comics on a week-to-week basis, then this is a great time to start because presumably you won't need to know anything about these characters. Theoretically you can navigate the comics currently being published without having to dig through decades of backstory.

Marvel

What got you into this fandom in the first place?

blackeyedgirl! She's a Marvel girl (though she also knows DC) and when I visited her in late July/early August 2011, she took me to see Captain America. In a word, "Wow!" We stayed after the credits for the Avengers preview and I decided right then to give this fandom a try. The moment we got home, she started writing fic and I went online to read it. *g* After my vacation, I re-watched Iron Man, then downloaded both Iron Man 2 and Thor. (Still haven't watched The Incredible Hulk because I don't want to confuse Norton!Banner with Ruffalo!Banner.) Anyway, I started reading Steve/Tony fic and learned about Civil War and other important arcs. I've very slowly picked up some comics knowledge and I'll read Steve/Tony in any canon universe, but most of my enthusiasm is for the movies. (I'm a multi-shipper in the movieverse fandom.)

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I'll probably stay a while? The fandom is very active! There's plenty of fic, terrific fanart, more movies coming out, and a backlog of comics to work through. It's not the DCU--I don't have the same emotional attachment, not yet. Who knows if Marvel will end up being like Trek, that kind of omnipresent fandom that never goes away, really. But I won't get bored any time soon, not when I'm having Tony Stark Feels all over the damn place! :D

Favourite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Favourite movies are... all of them? It'd be easier to pick my favourite scenes rather than try to compare the movies themselves. For Iron Man, it's Tony v the two USAF fighters, with Rhodey on the phone trying to keep everyone from getting blown up. Also, any time Tony is building in his workshop (e.g., Tony in hardware mode in IM2). For Thor, it's Thor and Loki in the SHIELD compound, and any time Jane and Darcy pass the Bechdel Test. For Captain America, it's Steve and Erskine--they made me cry at least twice!

My first Marvel trade was Avengers Prime and it's still my favourite. I liked New Avengers (until the Civil War badness), especially the "recruiting the team" arc. Watching everyone all come together up never stops being fun. Origin stories = yay!

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I've written one Steve/Tony fic for the
cap_ironman 2011 Secret Santa. I do hope to write more, though I'll admit the embarrassment of riches in this fandom means there's little incentive for me to do the work. In smaller fandoms or for rare pairings, I'll end up writing what I want to read because there's no one to do it for me. So who knows, I might write Tony Stark/Bruce Banner since there's only a handful of stories for that pairing.

I haven't really tried to participate in discussions (outside of comments in my friends' journals) since I don't know comics canon well enough to be conversant.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Yes! Especially if you're intimidated by comics canon! Just watch the movies and stick to that side of fandom, if you're not interested in getting mired in comics fandom. I mean, sure, there are some Marvel comics fans who are snobs about it, but as long as you label your fic properly and don't pretend the movies are the same as the comics, I can't imagine you'd have any problems!

The West Wing

What got you into this fandom in the first place?
My university roommate and I used to watch TV together: DS9, Voyager, Ally McBeal. He was also a huge TWW fan and spent years trying to convert me. November 2005: I finally gave in and borrowed his Season 1 DVDs. Guys, CJ had me at the pratfall, that's how quickly I got hooked. I've never been so happy to be wrong about a TV show! So I marathoned Season 1 in a total frenzy, then went on Amazon to purchase my own copy of Season 2. Between the two of us, we own all seven seasons and, like, three copies of Season 4. (Not really sure how that happened.)

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've already moved on. That is, I'm not actively watching, writing, reading, or making art for this fandom any more, even though I'll occasionally come back to it--especially during the U.S. general election season. *g* It's always fun to re-watch the S4 campaign arc while the Americans are busy voting.

I wouldn't put The West Wing up there with DCU and Trek in terms of its impact on my fannish life, but I have great fondness for it.

Favourite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Ooh, tough question! If I have to pick absolute favourites, it'd have to be S2's "Two Cathedrals", S4's "20 Hours in America", "Game On", and okay, pretty much the entire front half of Season 4. Especially the Sam/Will scenes (because I'm a tinhat shipper *g*). From the Wells years, S5's "The Supremes" even if it's AU to the earlier Mendoza episodes, S6's "In God We Trust" for Vinick and Bartlet eating ice cream in the White House kitchen, and S7's "Institutional Memory". I love CJ and Kate in the later seasons and I kinda shipped Will/Kate. To be honest, the West Wing plot-lines were always more interesting to me than the Santos campaign ones. (And I liked Vinick better, too.)

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not any more, but I used to write fic and participate in
raedbard's minis (bi-weekly ficathons) and make icons and wallpapers. I also wrote "meta" and participated in discussions.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Yes, definitely! The show was consistently terrific, though some fans prefer the Sorkin years and others prefer the Wells years. Sorkin is a superb wordsmith, despite some of his... issues. His dialogue is smart and fast and has this rhythm that I've never been able to emulate. He's not as feminist as he thinks he is--John Wells did far better by the female characters than Sorkin ever did. You'll love CJ Cregg and Kate Harper during the Wells years. You'll love the huge ensemble. If you like idealists and liberal politics, if you like strong, flawed, nuanced characters and complicated friendships, if you geek out on government process stories and high-stakes power-plays, then you'll love The West Wing.
