"Usual Suspects" Young Justice 1x25 (spoilers)

Okaaay... That certainly didn't go the way I expected! Spoilers for Young Justice 1x25:

My thoughts below might come off as slightly critical, but I really did enjoy this episode--way more than "Performance", to be honest. The Artemis-Jade stuff was fantastic and I liked the addition of Rocket. Student/mentor relationship with Icon ftw! And her, "Is it always like this?" And Zatanna not being the newbie any more, heh. Ooh, and Superboy being so aware that the patches were amping up his anger! That was very mature of you, Superboy--I doubt Kon would have done so well when he was only 6 months out of the pod.

Also! I am SUPER impressed that the Team now has a 1:1 male/female ratio, as well as three characters of colour! Well, two if you don't count Kaldur, which I'm not sure you can since we don't really know how--or even whether--Atlanteans make distinctions based on skin colour. Of course for fandom/real-life purposes, Kaldur is definitely a character of colour (and suffers for it, writing-wise).

Anyway, I do have some minor quibbles about the episode. I had expected or at least hoped that the show would spend more time dealing with Superboy, Artemis, and M'gann's issues. The scene we got was really nice, don't get me wrong, especially Superboy telling M'gann that he'd known about her natural form even before they got together--but it was WAY TOO SHORT. I wanted at least five minutes out of a 22 minute episode to deal with everyone's emotions! Unfortunately, there's not much of a chance the season finale will slow down long enough to give us more of a resolution. Ah well, I suppose that's what fanfic is for.

As for Roy, well... I'll admit it bothers me a little that they went with Roy instead of Superboy. I never expected it to be one of the girls--it would've been too much of a betrayal--but Superboy might have been interesting. That it was Roy means that we won't have to deal with anyone's personal choices because obviously Roy didn't choose to become a mole. Which makes the mole arc marginally less interesting and complicated, IMHO. My expectation that there would be more strife within the Team (if the mole had been Conner) and less "shocking twist" (Roy brainwashed into becoming the mole) was perhaps unrealistic. Maybe I was comparing it too much to Justice League/Justice League Unlimited? The Timmverse was pretty willing to paint with darker shades of grey, when the plot called for it.

That said, Roy is one of my favourite characters so I'm eager to see how this plays out for him. I really hope there's more Kaldur/Roy interaction, and Roy/Ollie and Dinah. There's a lot the show can say about Roy, about his months of being a jerk to Artemis because of his suspicions, when all along he was the mole. There will be fallout and I have to wonder if he'll resign from the Justice League and basically go back to being a lone wolf. Let's hope not! I don't want him joining the Team, though, because he's much more interesting as an outsider POV.

The Team

"...wait, Batman thinks we did good work?"

Raquel Ervin aka Rocket

Roy is the mole

One last thing: as much as I'd like to believe Roy being the mole gives us a greater chance of Lian being born, I would hate it if he had sex with Jade while mind-controlled. I really, really doubt the show would go there.

Can't wait for the finale!
