I got into London this afternoon from Southampton and have checked into a place that
skieswideopen recced to me. It doesn't have air conditioning, like I had assumed, but it does have free ethernet (yes, I said ethernet), which IMHO is a fair trade since it's not hot enough to require air conditioning and I never say no to free internet. *g*
I have my dad's little netbook with me, because he gets nervous when people go on vacation and wants to "stay in touch", and boy, let me tell you it was a job and a half trying to keep this thing's battery charged. For some reason the North American to UK adapter I'd brought with me wasn't working, and I was worried I needed a converter as well. I searched seven stores in Southampton (and was told in each store to try the store I'd just come from!) until a guy at a travel/camping goods store recommended Malpins. The people at Malpins were TERRIFIC. If you're in the UK and need eletronics help, definitely go there. They were willing to open up packages for me so I could test different adapters and converters until they found one that worked. And yeah, I ended up spending less money than if I had panicked and bought the first thing I thought I needed. (I'm not very technologically/electronics inclined.) Now all my devices are working and I was relaxed enough to actually enjoy Southampton. Portsmouth got... messy. I didn't get to see the D-Day Museum like I'd planned, but in Southampton I got to visit the Spitfire museum, the City Art Gallery, the harbourfront. I got a little Spitfire poster with cutaways of its engine! And I wrote more John/Cam Tour of Europe fic. *g* No promises on it getting posted without a serious edit, though.
This afternoon I walked around the Buckingham Palace and Green Park area. Proof that I'm getting old? My left knee is stiff and swollen from all the walking I've been doing the past three days. It takes effort to use the stairs! I had dinner at a late dinner at The Shakespeare, which despite the slow service has good food: I had a very delicious steak and ale pie and a pint of Stella. (It only takes a pint to get me all flushed and tipsy. I could barely finish it, and now I'm chugging water. It's so sad.) Tomorrow I'm taking a bus tour to Leeds Castle, Canterbury, and Dover. If I can find a movie theatre nearby, I'll go see Harry Potter tomorrow night. :D No spoilers please!
Also, I've been watching Haven, copied off one of
colls' many external hardrives. *g* It's fun! As an FBI agent and a cop, Audrey kind of sucks--the cop show fan in me cringed through the first few episodes--but the character stuff and the ongoing mystery are all very interesting. I'm really enjoying it!
While I was eating dinner, I got a chance to read the newsbar on Sky (since I couldn't hear the TV) and heard about Norway. God, that's horrible. I'll pray for justice for the victims and peace and healing for the families.
