30 Days of Female Characters: Day 25 redux

Apr 17, 2011 21:43

So yesterday I posted Day 25 of my 30 Days of Female Characters meme, only I completely forgot some essential mother-daughter and sister relationships! This is what happens when I get too focused on media fandom and forget the books I used to love as a child.

SPOILERS FOR BOOKS! Just in case there are any Joey Tribbianis on my dwircle/flist.

Anne of Green Gables: Anne Shirley and Marilla Cuthbert. Talkative, imaginative Anne and stoic, no-nonsense Marilla were such a wonderful pair. Despite Marilla's exasperation over this flighty, strange little girl she suddenly finds herself raising, they build a real family together and with Matthew, and it's just a beautiful story. I used to re-read the entire Anne series every few months, growing up, especially the first four novels. (Not to mention all the other L.M. Montgomery works. I really need to read The Blue Castle again.)

Little House series: Laura and Mary Ingalls, Laura and Caroline Ingalls. I used to love these books. Love. My favourites, iirc as it's been ages since I read them, were By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, and These Happy Golden Years. I vaguely recall one line in which Laura compared herself to her Ma, her sister Mary, and a third woman whose name I can't recall (also a Mary, I think?) and described these women as good. As embodiments of kindness and patience, while she herself was not. I remember thinking how beautiful it was, that she admired them so much and valued those qualities and tried to be more like them, especially after Mary's blindness.

Little Women: Meg, Jo ♥, Beth, and Amy March. And of course Marmee. ♥ They were friends and sisters, four distinct personalities who clashed on occasion, who loved and supported one another, who played together, whose most important society was each other. Who doesn't remember Jo's love for gentle Beth, or her problems with Amy? ... Um, guys. I just made myself cry thinking about Beth. All I did was read the Wikipedia summary! And now I have big fat tears rolling down my cheeks! *blows nose* God, that's a good book.

Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth and Jane Bennet. I adored their relationship, Jane's fair-mindedness tempering Lizzy's prejudice, Lizzy's scepticism tempering Jane's naiveté. They confided in each other, provided emotional support, and shared the burden of keeping their household from spinning out of control. They were together in times of distress, in moments of happiness, and in fact Jane and Bingley moved to a whole new county and bought a house nearby so they could be close to Elizabeth and Darcy. I find P&P's conclusion wonderfully satisfying in part because I enjoy seeing characters get exactly what they deserve. And Lizzy and Jane really deserved what they got. *g*
