"Hanley Waters", Criminal Minds 6x20

Spoilers for CM 6x20:

Hotch sitting down with each member of the team to assess their grieving process was note-perfect. I kept waiting for him to slip up and give away the game, but I shouldn't have worried--any senior FBI agent with as much experience as Hotch has would be an expert at secret-keeping. Oh, I hate how much they're hurting, though. Especially Morgan and Reid. At least Garcia's trying to focus on the good, bless her heart. I noticed Hotch didn't speak to Seaver, or at least we didn't see that session. Too bad, I think it would've given us some much needed insight into Seaver's state of mind.

Rossi, I kind of love you. "I guess I've come to realise I'm more married to this team than I ever was to three ex-wives." ♥

This ep continues Season 6's trend of focusing on the unsub's state of mind. I mean, I get that it's called Criminal Minds for a reason, but lately it's all been the unsub's POV and emotional state. Can we please stop focusing on the killers here? OTOH, I found the woman, Shelly Chamberlain, somewhat sympathetic. She was so far gone and so clearly beyond rational thinking that I couldn't feel disgust, just pity.

But it's also because she's... not a "bad guy" the way some unsubs are. She's not the obvious villain, just a grieving mother. Which goes to our prejudices, I suppose, where we rank degrees of evilness based on how close to "normal" a person is.

FYI, Hanley Road and Waters Avenue is an intersection Tampa, Florida. The criminal who started the high speed chase with the cops, and who slammed his car into Shelly Chamberlain's car, killing her son Damien, is named Hanley Waters. And the episode is "Hanley Waters" because everyone remembers the unsub, not the victims. Nice touch, CM writers, but it doesn't let you off the hook for focusing on the unsubs, not the victims. Sheesh.

Anyway. I cried. I miss Prentiss. I miss JJ. I wish they were here.

Grieving is a process. They knocked the Morgan and Hotch scenes out of the park.
