Oh, DUH. I can't believe it took me this long to figure out
when Prentiss had time to leave her badge, gun, and cellphone in her desk drawer for Hotch to find. At the very end of "Valhalla", when she and Morgan return for the multi-agency task-force briefing, she slides around the left side of the room, behind the crowd. The camera doesn't focus or linger; our view of her is obstructed by people's heads, a pillar. The camera then goes to Morgan, then shows Hotch from the crowd's perspective, then again in profile. It goes to Reid--who is sitting on his desk, I think, right next to Emily's desk!--then back to Hotch, then back to Morgan with Emily coming up behind him.
In other words, Emily Prentiss effectively resigned from the FBI right under the noses of every law enforcement agency in DC, as well as THE REST OF HER TEAM.
I love her. (Still hate CBS, though.)
This also explains why we see Prentiss open her desk drawer after talking to Reid about his migraines. It's to establish, hey, empty drawer. Nothing up my sleeve! (And, yes, to show her hesitate: "Can I stay? Do I run?") Then, next episode, desk drawer magically full of badge, gun, and cellphone! Innnteresting sleight of hand.
I prefer
