I'm trying to pay more attention to Canadian news and politics since I've begun to reach my limit of reading and hearing about the U.S.'s latest frustrating failures. Canada has its own screw-ups and deserves as much of my internet ink, if not more, as our neighbour to the south.
In Winnipeg, protesters rallied for an hour (which seems short for a rally, but it's Winnipeg, in winter) to demand Judge Dewar's resignation over comments he made during a sexual assault sentencing.
Take a wild stab at what Dewar said that these protesters find so offensive. Go on, guess. According to the CBC article,
Judge's sex-assault comments spark rally:
Dewar said "sex was in the air" when he spared a man jail time by handing him a two-year conditional sentence last week instead and allowed him to remain free in the community. [...]
The man and a friend met the woman, who is now 25, and her girlfriend earlier that night outside a bar under what Dewar called "inviting circumstances."
The judge pointed out the victim and her friend were dressed in tube tops, no bras, and high heels and noted they were wearing plenty of makeup.
Dewar called the man a "clumsy Don Juan" who may have misunderstood what the victim wanted.
Same typical crap. What I want to know is whether Dewar believes that men wearing tight t-shirts are "inviting" rape. Men, are you wearing a belt that draws attention to your crotch? You're asking for it. Men, are you wearing tight jeans? You're asking for it. Men, are you wearing sexy shoes? You're asking for it. (And if you don't know that you're wearing sexy shoes and just think you're wearing classy wingtips, wow, that's totally on you to deal with, not the person raping you.) Men, did you bend over to pick up your keys off the ground? Showing off your ass means you're asking for it. Even if you change your mind in the middle of the action, it's your fault for wearing those clothes and getting drunk. You were in "inviting circumstances" and that woman (or man) who is making you have sex against your will doesn't need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law because, after all, you were asking for it.
Weren't you?
