Day 07 - Least favourite episode of your favourite TV show
To be fair, Stargate Atlantis has a few very offensive episodes--the two with Lucius Lavin, for example, though "Irresistible" could have at least been salvaged if Lucius had been castrated and sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple rapes.
But the ep that really offends me in terms of characterisation is "The Game" (SGA 3x15). I know some people think it's a cute episode, with John and Rodney playing the Ancient equivalent of Civilization for three years in secret. But I'm sorry, this episode makes me see red, just thinking about it. In particular, the Lorne and Zelenka scene in which they knowingly and wantonly wreak havoc on two societies makes me want to PUNCH THEM IN THE FACE. Hard. A lot. (And I generally like Lorne and Zelenka. This episode is so OOC for them, grrr.)
Furthermore, the solution Sheppard comes up with, to basically mess with these people's heads even more, to essentially hold their balls to the fire until they behave like good little primitive societies, is infuriating. God, I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it. I feel the writers could have given Elizabeth a chance to shine, but alas, once again her skills as an experienced negotiator and diplomat are given lip service in favour of the John & Rodney Show, and their guest-stars, the Lorne & Zelenka Show. Just--fuck the whole, "Oh, boys will be boys!" vibe, seriously.
Plus, this episode just spits in the face of the characterisation of the Ancients up until now. I know the Ancients aren't popular, with the SGA crowd in particular, but they have a moral code! Yes, they seeded life in two galaxies, and yes, there has been the odd rebel, like Chaya and Oma Desala and Morgan Le Fay--but generally the Ancients are Trek-like with their whole Prime Directive, no interfering with human development shtick.
Thankfully, even Mallozzi and Mullie seemed to recognise that this episode SUCKED EPICALLY, because Don Whitehead and Holly Henderson never wrote another episode of Stargate Atlantis.
*deep breath* Sorry, I really should have skipped this question, instead of getting riled up about it. Well, on the plus side I've been watching a bit of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and reminding myself that good sci-fi exists. In fact, I just watched
"Playing God" this afternoon. YAY. SMART SHOW IS SMART.
