Signal Boost: LJ getting rid of "Unspecified" gender option

Dec 15, 2009 01:47

Gender will soon be a mandatory field for new LiveJournal accounts, and gender options will be limited to "male" or "female". We will no longer have the "unspecified" option.

Wow, this? This right here is why I have LiveJournal's v-gifts disabled and thus missed out on the free snowflake cookies last week. This is why I've never deleted my LJ Strikethrough 2007 icon. This is why I regret not turning off comments on LiveJournal as soon as I opened my Dreamwidth account. I should have just done that immediately, and not let LJ suck more usage out of me.

From this post on, I will crosspost to LJ but I will only accept comments on Dreamwidth. If you would like a Dreamwidth code, I have some to spare. Or you can comment using OpenID. ETA: Or you can comment anonymously! I have anon commenting on my DW! I should just delete my LJ altogether, but I'm not quite ready to do that--though I may get there very soon.

Fandom--that is, my interaction with the people I've met online via fandom--has taught me a lot over the years, about anti-racism and feminism and many other issues. And one of the lessons I've learned is that I can't ignore discrimination like this. It's not harmless. It's disgusting and I don't think we can excuse it as just market research.

Please check out
synecdochic's very helpful post on how you can lodge your protest with LJ. Also, I have set the gender in my user profile to "Unspecified". I'm not giving them more demographics for their ads.

ETA2: LJ is back-pedalling like whoa. I guess they didn't expect such a strong and speedy negative response from users! Go
synecdochic for keeping a keen eye on LJ and go us for bombarding them with feedback!
