I see her point, however often when a religious identifier is used when the topic isn't religion, it's to shade in anti-religious sentiment.

"Muslim protesters demonstrate" or "Jewish bankers say global crisis not their fault." Yes, some of the bankers involved in the crisis are Jewish, but when a conservative commentator invokes "Jewish bankers" specifically it's to color their remarks with anti-Semitism, because the important thing is that they're bankers, not that they are also Jewish. I see the same thing happen with Christian a lot. In a liberal audience, especially in a queer audience, it's a way to discredit the speaker without actually addressing their words.
