Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I saw Harry Potter on Tuesday night! And hey, now I remember that I've actually read Half-Blood Prince. For some reason I'd forgotten that I'd read (and own) it and that it's only Books 4-5 that I haven't finished.

No real plot spoilers, just squee about the actors and their characters:
  • SNAPE. I think my only real complaint for this movie is that we didn't spend enough time with Snape. I'm gonna have to watch this movie a second and third time, just so I can study Alan Rickman's performance.

  • Dude, Tom Felton rocked! I found Draco Malfoy interesting for the first time ever. Very compelling. I think he wins Most Improved.

  • Michael Gambon was surprisingly excellent. *g* The only bit that threw me at first were the last two lines--I had expected a different feeling, if that makes sense? He played it far more reserved and dignified, which also worked. I just hadn't expected it.

  • Emma Watson was also excellent--she must have worked her cute little butt off. Of course Hermione has always been one of my favourites, and I think the Harry-Hermione friendship was one of the highlights of the film.

  • Daniel Radcliffe continues to knock my socks off. Who knew back when he was an ickle newbie that he'd become the amazing actor he is today?

  • Rupert Grint was quite good. He doesn't usually click for me, but all the Quidditch stuff was perfect. The trio as best friends never fails to make me smile :)

  • I love that Ginny is taller than Harry! While I prefer my HP kids to stay gen, Bonnie Wright was pretty convincing. She still felt a bit remote, though, in a way Hermione never is--probably because we're never really in Ginny's POV.

  • Slughorn = wonderful. I can't really remember what my first impression of him was when reading the book, but Jim Broadbent (oh hey, Professor Kirke!) made a good Slughorn.

  • Hi Narcissa! Was that Naomi Watts? She looked older than Bellatrix. Great scene though. My minor quibble was the sequence of the scenes--I suppose they figured better to open with the hero of the story.

  • Y'know, I always assumed Lavendar Brown was black. I mean, I had an inkling I was pulling that out of thin air? But somehow it got stuck in my head that she was black--probably there was a black girl in the early movies, hanging around in the Gryffindor common room, and I just assumed she must be Lavendar Brown. Huh.

WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE. SERIOUSLY WHAT IS WITH ALL THE WHITE-WASHING. LAVENDER BROWN IS A BLACK GIRL. THIS SHIT IS *NOT ON*.

  • Evanna Lynch was brilliant. But I'm extremely biased because I think Luna is second only to Hermione for female characters.

  • David Thewlis is ridiculously hot. Why? Why?

  • Natalia Tena was fine, she just didn't grab my attention. As a tinhat slasher I'm a bit conflicted about Tonks, but in an effort to be a better feminist I'm leaning towards "smart choice" and "I'm okay with it" for what they did with her.

  • Where was Cho? I saw her name in the credits (yes, I stayed for the credits) but I don't recall seeing her in the film.

  • I like that the waitress was black. Was she in the book? Was she black? I can't remember.

Will have to go see it again soon! In IMAX!
