Dude. I can't call it The O.C. Not all the time, anyway. It just doesn't fit! Spoilers for tonight's O.C. behind the cut-tag.
So you know how Fred on Angel is pretty much Girl!Wesley? Dude, Little Miss Girl Next Door? Is totally Girl!Seth. But with better social skills. I like this chick -- surprising, cuz I thought for sure I wouldn't. But Marissa has way more charisma than Fred ever did (pun definitely intended). Seriously. Marissa is Cordelia, but un-bitchy. She's honest and open, she's young and very sixteen. And she comes across as vulnerable, but not in any fake, melodramatic, woe-is-me, Lana Lang way. Um. Or it could just be that Mischa Barton is a better actress than Kristin Kreuk. That could be it.
And how cute was Seth, getting all weirded out that Marissa had the exact same tastes in books and music? So cute! And jealous! He totally was jealous of this girl horning in on his guy-time with Ryan. And
thamiris totally needs to write about Ryan and Seth (and Marissa) "sprucing up" the model home in her essay on
Domestic Penetration.
Anyway, to get back to my Girl!Seth point. Season 2 of Angel had Angel dump Wesley, and Wesley get street kid Gunn as his potential new boyfriend. But before they can get it on, along comes a skinny, geeky, glasses-wearing, text book-reading brunette female and Gunn falls head-over-heels. And Wesley is left out in the cold. Seth was all "She's just like me! With boobs!" at Ryan, but I don't think Ryan heard him. Poor Seth.
And poor Ryan! Let's see if he can make it through an episode without getting beat up or beating on someone else. The guy's had bruises on his face nearly half the time he's been on screen.
Two good things that came out of Ryan running way: 1) Ryan, Seth, and Marissa all become friends, with Seth and Marissa finally noticing that the other isn't some alien pod person after all; 2) Seth realises how much Sandy actually cares, despite being something of a clueless dork.
Really enjoying this show. The snark is pretty good, especially coming from Seth. The only thing off was the "romantic scene" between Ryan and Marissa. Awkward, forced, staged. Hopefully the actors will get more comfortable doing romantic scenes, and hopefully, hopefully! The writers will never inflict such godawful dialogue on the actors ever again.
All in all? Really looking forward to next week.
