If I am not mistaken, it originates as follows: Way before the bible, and after, and all that good stuff, the concept of clasping one's hands was used to beg for mercy. Prisoners, with their hands tied, really couldn't do much else. So that's where clasping hands came from. It came to be used in prayer and church mostly because of the Old Testament, the vengeful, wrathful God, who rained fire and brimstone and all that happiness. People begged for forgiveness for their sins, and for blessings, and they clasped their hands. It makes sense, I guess. Now the idea of putting your hands together, but not clasping them, you know, leaving them straight, I believe can be blamed on the Protestants and Martin Luther, who not only did not see the need to beg for mercy (instead asking for it, a little friendlier approach) used the hands in general for connective purposes. It was a symbol of togetherness, of mutual peace, blah blah blah. I could be wrong on that last part, I'm not really sure where that came from, but that's my gut instinct.
