Antisocial Wuff

Meh.  It's Winter.  It gets dark too early. *grumble*.

Not much going on here.  Now that I'm back from the January FC road trip, it's been a process of getting back into a "routine".  I seriously need to lose weight, which means strictly eating in, and no more junk food.  So I don't plan on being too social, at least for things centered around eating for the next few months.

I've pretty much withdrawn from all social media. I've come to consider most of it to be pure cancer.  In a way it's depresssing.  So this is what the Internet has become?  A bunch of overgrown children posting fragments of nonsense to beg for attention.  "Look at me!  Look at me!  Give me attention!"  Case in point: Stupidity like the "Tide Pod Challenge".  I believe that part of becoming an adult is to stop giving a damn about what everyone else thinks about you, and to stop seeking approval and validation for everything.  You're a grownup!  Think and act for yourself, and accept and deal with any resulting consequences.  (This coming from a babyfur with a plushie collection to rival most three-year-olds, so YMMV.  LOL)  I just don't see the need to advertise all of my life details to the world.  And I especially don't see the need to let some piece of shit like Zuckerberg mine that information for his own enrichment.

I'm trying to get a job right now, with the help of a friend, but my first attempt didn't work out.  Got word back that I wasn't a "good fit".  I have a nagging suspicion that "good fit" == "under 30".  It's a position which should have had no technical barriers for me, given my experience.  Fortunately, my personal situation is such that working is pretty much optional, so it's not stressing me out that much.  I will note that times have changed.  When I first entered the field, you interviewed mainly with managers, and THEY decided who or who not to hire.  Nowadays, sometimes even fairly junior engineers are given a veto on hires, and I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.  In particular, it takes some maturity to get beyond "This person isn't just like me (or my peers) so I don't want them on the team."  In my opinion, the concept of "cultural fit" you see these days is dangerously close to out-and-out discrimination.  It's a workplace, not a fucking social club or frat house.  Who cares if people have differences from each other, as long as they're not assholes, they're competent, and they get their work done?

job, winter, life
