As There is a Use in Medicine for Poisons...

“ABOMINATIONS!”

Ethan jumped. She would be quiet then suddenly start screaming.

“Head and heart. Keep cutting until you see dust.”

Then she growled and started screeching in Romanian about slaying demons and being chosen. Every once in awhile it was in Chinese. She kept charging at the magical barrier containing her. Sometimes she would do it so often that she would knock herself out. Ethan lived for those moments because then they would have peace while she ‘rested’.

“You’re certain that will hold her,” Ethan said.

“It will not,” the demon who called itself Calibos said. “She is strong. Her soul may be fractured, but the will is there. Which is why you will not fail me. I will not go back to the underworld. You will bring me Clarent, so that when he comes for me, I will finish him.”

“You’re certain that will work?” Ethan asked.

“The sword of fire was the blade that killed Arthur. It was wielded by Mordred. It will be enough to end a god.”

“What about the spell on the cells at the council? How long will they hold?”

“Abraxan and Loreth will maintain the spell and banish the food, so that it appears you still remain, but that will only work for so long. If the witch goes to investigate, she will see their magic. Now why haven’t you gotten the sword for me?”

“These things take time,” Ethan said. “I didn’t anticipate getting captured. I need the witch’s blood, but the team has already been hired to steal the weapons and a price finally agreed upon. It will be soon. The weapons are on display until the winter holiday. We have time still.”

“I grow impatient, Ethan Rayne. If you do not deliver the sword to me and the sais to Abraxan and Loreth, we will let Greyback eat you. Now where is the girl? Bring her to me.”

Ethan shivered when he thought of the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. That fellow was a nasty piece of work. He still didn’t know why Calibos was holding him either. Calibos had raised that animal from the dead. He had heard the chantings of a wolf pack and decided to appease them. They had proved to be useful minions because of this. They all had their place in this. Yes, Ethan knew everything, everyone here served a purpose, but he was not aware of the full plan. He turned and watched as some vampire minions dragged a woman in. He was starting to be plagued with the feeling he was getting a bit in over his head here. Calibos was calm and could be dealt with, but Abraxan and Loreth were more demon than human, and Ethan felt the only thing keeping them from going wild and eating people was Calibos. The sooner Ethan did his part and got out of here, the better.

The woman was flung to the floor. As she raised her head, Ethan frowned. She looked a little familiar. She had obviously been beaten very badly, though.

“You will bring us the blood of the dark witch, Daphne Greengrass.”

Ethan blinked. She looked like the one that had taken him to Giles. That’s why she looked familiar. And Greengrass? Same surname as the other one. Had to be a sister. Possibly a cousin.

“I will,” Daphne said. “Willow trusts me now. She’s let me in her bed. It will be easy. Will I still get what you have promised me?”

“When you deliver the dark witch’s blood, I will keep up my end of our bargain.”

Dana started screeching again, and Ethan wondered briefly what kind of deal this young witch crouched on the ground still had made with Calibos. He also idly wondered what they would do with this insane slayer when they were finished with her. There were too many unnerving components to this.

Ethan shrugged it off. None of it concerned him. All he wanted was to have his debt with the demon paid and getting Clarent was the way to get that done. Whatever else happened was not his problem.
