Song of the Green

Theo had stayed late because Sveta had gone on patrol - against his orders - with Lydia and both girls had gotten hurt. He was considering killing their watcher then bringing the moron back to life. The only thing stopping him was that scroll in Giles’ office. He wandered into the kitchen to grab a snack after lecturing Sveta on how someone was six months pregnant didn’t need to be going on patrols. The slayer was currently sleeping and he needed a break from her snores.

Theo stopped when he saw the blue woman staring at the locked cellar where the alcohol was kept.

“Issues?”

“I am feeling... unhappy. I wish to numb myself with alcoholic beverage, but I do not know the way inside without breaking this.”

“What can I get you?” Theo said as he punched in the combination.

“Something potent.”

Theo grabbed some of Nem’s Nook’s Red Dragon Firewhisky. It had a definite kick to it. The MacDougals didn’t brew anything halfway, though.

She grabbed the bottle from him roughly and broke the end off of it on a table rather than actually opening it. Instantly a house elf appeared that was looking wary but cleaned up the glass.

Theo raised a brow. “So you’re sad then?”

“I am having thoughts about a man who died. I do not wish to discuss it with you.”

Theo nodded and grabbed a glass from the cabinet. “Fair enough. So I heard you were a hellgoddess. What was that like?”

“Different than this plane. Beings cowered at my feet.”

“I can see how you’d miss that,” Theo said as he took the bottle from her and poured himself a finger.

She snatched it back. “You mock me, insignificant human.”

“I wouldn’t dare,” Theo said with a smirk. “And I’m a bit more than just a human.”

“Yes, you have dominion over the dead, but you are not considered a god. The Greeks called the being who did this a god.”

“Hades,” Theo supplied.

“Yes. Lord of the Underworld.”

“I’m surprised you know him.”

“I do not,” she said. “I have read of him in books. When I am not inflicting violence, this vessel still recalls it likes to read.”

“Hmmm,” was Theo’s only response

“Many things about this vessel are bothersome to me, but I do not miss my plane. I miss being a master of time and space. I miss conversing with the green. The song of the green is what I long for.”

Theo frowned. “Conversing with the green? Oh, you mean the plants. You do talk to the plants. I’ve seen you.”

“But they no longer speak back.”

Theo nodded. He could see how that might be disconcerting. Especially if it were something you were used to. Maybe he should ask Longbottom about getting her a cheery blossom. Theo finished his drink and put the glass in the sink. He wanted to get back to the infirmary and make sure Sveta was still asleep.

“Have a good night, Miss Illyria. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.”

“It will be, Theodore Nott. I was promised roasted dead birds.”

Theo just nodded. Half the time Illyria spoke, he didn’t know how to respond.
