A/N: Originally an OT ficlet, for the "reasons people have sex" prompt, number 47: I didn't know how to say "no".
A lump forms in his throat and the force of everything he’s feeling is almost enough to make him sick, but he manages to choke out two-thirds of the words before she stops him. Giving him a sad smile, she places a hand on his shoulder, and he realizes vaguely that her perfume smells like lilacs. “Stephen, sweetie, no,” she says, eyes kind. “Trust me. A month into college life and you’re going to forget all about me. This was fun, but that’s all it was. I think you know that.”
“No, I don’t,” he replies fiercely, because he’s a man, and he doesn’t want to cry in front of her. “I can’t just forget about you-about what I feel-it’s-”
“You’re eighteen,” she says gently. “You’re young. It’s confusing, I know. But you don’t love me. You’ll see.” She kisses him softly and looks him in the eyes, and as she walks away he wonders if this is how it feels to be stabbed in the gut.
