“Jon.”
Jon tried not to jump out of his skin. He'd just turned on the light in his office and there Stephen was, sitting on his desk, apparently trying to give him a heart attack. “Jesus, Stephen, you scared the shit out of me.” He shook his head and walked into his office, shutting the door behind him. “You know, when I gave you the key, it wasn't so you could sneak in here and scare me half to death.”
“Sorry,” said Stephen, and he did look a little bit contrite. “I wanted to ask you something. It's important.”
“Okay,” Jon said, wondering if Stephen had decided to change up the format for his bi-weekly “intervention”. “Shoot.”
“Are you happy?” he asked, voice very quiet. “With Brian, I mean. Are you and he-you seem happy. He makes you giggle a lot.”
Jon blinked. This was new. “Yeah, Stephen,” he said honestly. “I am happy.”
“Were you sad before?”
“Uh,” Jon faltered. “For awhile, after the divorce, I guess so, yeah. Why?”
Stephen didn't say anything for a long moment, staring at a spot on the floor and swinging his legs absently. When he glanced up, he fixed Jon with a look of such clarity that he almost asked what alien life-form had taken over Stephen's body. “Then I guess it's better,” he said and stood, walking toward the door. He chanced a glance back over his shoulder before exiting, leaving Jon to stand next to his desk and wonder.
