...when the Blizzard of '78 hit?

What wikipedia has to say about The Blizzard of '78Me, I was in the 8th grade. I was in school when it started snowing. They didn't release us early. I remember that the bus ride home was quite the adventure and it took well over an hour ( Read more... )

oh, I LOVE this entry! seriously! it was such a THING. I have home movies of my sister and I on the snow, which came up to our (second-floor) PORCH. I was five years old and it was SUCH an event. Mostly what I remember is that my mom's bottle of tab froze in the trunk of the car and exploded a little, and that she had to pull us on sleds to go shopping that week.

now I want to go find the pictures from it.

VERY cool post, to remember it!

It was! I think the snowpile lasted until May.

Yes, dig out your pictures. I want to see!

Woo, that snow means business! I don't think I can ever remember quite that much snow, but of course I grew up in a weird little pocket of SW Ontario that doesn't get a lot. A metre or so at most, I think, and generally not all at once.

As to where I was . . . well, you know. ;)

We usually don't get dumped on like that all at once. Most big storms will drop maybe a foot of snow.

You're a youngster!

I was 8, and don't have a specific memory of the storm, but I do of the aftermath. To my chagrin, we are going to beat that snowfall record here this year. I can tell you, it isn't easy to get that much snow spread out, either.

it isn't easy to get that much snow spread out,

I sympathize. A couple of years ago we had a record snowfall winter, well over 100" (keep in mind that the official record reflects snowfall at Logan which is on the coast and therefore usually doesn't get as much snow as inland). In my town, it was probably in the 125"-135" range for the winter. It was awful!

This storm is one of my earliest memories, although it wasn't as bad in NY as it was in MA. My mother was a nurse, and got stuck at the hospital for a few days. I remember my father made oatmeal for he and I in my mother's fondue pot.

Um.. I wasn't born yet? *g* But those pictures are awesome. :) That's an incredible amount of snow to fall in such a short time!
