There’s a hand tangling into his hair and another sliding underneath his kit, a trembling body flush with his and an eager mouth against his own, and he’s guessing this isn’t what the papers mean when they talk about the romance of the FA Cup.
Tomorrow’s headlines will all proclaim another classic upset, no doubt using trite references to fairy tales and David versus Goliath. Maybe he’ll think of the match in similar terms someday, looking back. But mostly what he’ll remember is this moment-this kiss, and the bliss of winning a prize infinitely more valuable than any trophy.
