That Bite-Your-Nails Anxiety
Percy Jackson had been missing for six months, two weeks, three days, six hours and twenty-three minutes. All of Camp Half-Blood was working to prepare for the journey that lay ahead for a group that would be sailing on the currently half-built Argo II. The trip would take them across the country to the Roman camp that they'd only recently found out existed because of the arrival of Jason Grace, son of Jupiter and praetor of the Roman camp. Annabeth Chase was supposed to be the most anxious to go on the trip, because it meant finding Percy, her boyfriend who had been taken and exchanged for Jason.
The problem was that she was not so anxious. At least, not about finding Percy. She knew they would find Percy at the Roman camp. She could feel it. The only thing that would keep her from finding Percy would be if that stupid seaweed-for-a-brain son of Poseidon did something ridiculous, like get himself killed by not watching his back - quite literally. Even if his memories were missing like Jason thought they might be, there was no way Percy wouldn't figure out that he had to watch his back.
No, Annabeth wasn't anxious. Worried, yes, but she wasn't huddled in the corner, biting her nails to ragged stubs anxious. Not about finding Percy. What she was biting her nails to ragged stubs about was being on a ship, in close quarters with the son of Jupiter that would be leading this voyage across the country.
Since Jason's arrival, Annabeth knew that there were similarities between the son of Jupiter and the son of Poseidon. There was no denying that. They were both strong fighters, Jason perhaps more so because of the extensive, rough training of Roman life, but they were so clearly similar, even with the differences. Annabeth could see that. She saw so much of Percy in Jason that it had become a problem for her. Though she had been trying to ignore it, that similarity to Percy was drawing her to Jason and, as she had found out only recently, drew her more to the Roman demigod than the Greek she had been dating until his disappearance.
Staying aboard the Argo II was not going to be easy for her. She would not be able to avoid Jason long on the ship, no matter how big it seemed to be. One way or another, Annabeth was going to have to face the son of Jupiter and, despite what her heart told her about staying faithful to Percy, she was going to have to face the stronger feelings she had for Jason. Whether she was ready to face those feelings or not, she had fallen in love with him and she could not logic her way out of that love.
The day the Argo II set sail, Annabeth faced her feelings after an initial launch meeting, pulled Jason aside and kissed him after everyone else had left the meeting room.
It was the best verboten kiss ever.
