This entry is part 48 of 51 in the series 365 Challenge
Let's take the third first. Overhauling the story from inferno, aka "Dowse and Bleed," left me feeling drained and exhausted, but it's out to beta and may she not find any more structural issues that need addressing. For that matter, may I not!

A/N: It’s not fluffy, but that’s fine. I wanted to give you something to hold you. Somewhat anyway. Knowing me, I might’ve just prodded the deluge of questions. A double-drabble.

“Why did you stay?” Ricki asked as she propped her chin on her hands to see his face better.

Brushfire shrugged, hand still caught in her hair. It had been so long since they could find a grassy park and just be there together, finding shapes in the clouds, sharing their worries and cares of leadership, and simply... talked.

“It needed doing.”

She sat up, pulled away, not sure she wanted to hear the rest, but his hand on her wrist stopped her.

“You know my team was tasked with stopping genetic experimentation.”

She started to reply, but he pressed on.

“Burn’s mother was our admin.”

That stopped her.

Brushfire shook his head and let her go, certain now she wouldn’t leave if he did. “We weren’t the only victims.”

She wanted to shake her head, fight him over it, but he was right. He was right. She brooded for a moment, then rolled over to lay her head back on his chest, staring at the sky.

“Promise me you won’t do that again,” she said. “Promise me wherever we go next, it’ll be together.”

Silence stretched taut between them until at last, he breathed, “I go by Alex now.”

Oh, yeah, that would be a reason to stay, to make sure that stuff did end.

I do have more questions, but I can save them for later.

He didn't promise her, though...

Primarily because I ran out of words. It was his way of promising though, that he was done. It's really over.
