Okay! Anyone who doesn’t like to fight, doesn’t want to fight but still wants to get rid of the pirates, please meet me on Deck 07, starboard side, near the front of the boat! I have a very special job for everyone! Yay!
[B is waiting there with a whole stack of buckets, gloves, rubber boots, scrapers, pails, basins and face masks. He pulls down

Once she'd put her stuff out of the way in Haine's room, Bryn headed down to deck seven to find the mechanic.]

Hi! Are you here to help?

Yeah, I am. Just tell me what to do and I'll get started.

[B smiles at her and leads the woman over to the piles of clothes.]
You'll probably want to wear these so your clothes don't get dirty, so here's some boots, a smock, gloves and a facemask--
[B began to rummage through, pulling out clothes her guessed to be her approximate size. He held one smock up to her and clucked his tongue.]
This one is way too big--you'll look like a tent. Which you don't look like. At all.
[Aw crap. Pretty girls always did this to him. B coughed as he felt a blush starting on his face and grabbed a smaller smock.]

Thanks. Whatever you say, boss.
[She gave him a grin, amused at the blush on his cheeks. What was that reaction for?]
Do I put the smock on over my clothes or instead of...?

[Strangely her teasing question came out sounding a bit more professional, so B slips into professional mode as well, nodding seriously and blonde hair falling into his eyes.]

[Bryn began slipping on the smock over her clothes, then the boots, and the gloves as she spoke.]
I'm Bryn. What do you prefer to be called? Feels weird just knowing you as "the mechanic."

[B pulls his mask but over his face and leads her over to the scoops, scrapers and basins. He hands her one of each and then leads her over to the beginning of the slime. A large area has already been scraped clear, thanks to the mechanic's efforts.]
You just kneel down and-- yeah. Scrape.

...I think a lot of us aren't used to long names like that. Gonna take me a while to get the whole thing down.
[Her nose wrinkled at the thought of her full name.]
And no, Bryn isn't my whole name, but I don't want to keep my family name.
[She pulled the mask over her face when B did and took the tools he offered, and knelt down where it appeared he'd left off. Carefully, she began to scrape at the floor.]

[The thought of purposefully disowning family has never once occurred to B. His genetic line is his name--his genetics boiled down to a coded hex of letters, letting everyone from his world know his genetic makeup, specialties and abilities.
To intentionally hide that... guh.
He scrapes with her.]
This is so gross.

[She continued scrapping, a bit more angrily. Why yes, there was that chip on her shoulder.]
...you're right, this stuff is disgusting.

B's mouth drops open behind his mask.]
Didn't-- like you? But you're--theirs!
[Not loving a child? Impossible. Unthinkable. Does not compute. He shifts closer, helping her scrape off a really tenacious tentacle. He picks it up between his thumb and his forefinger.]
... looks like sushi.

[She can tell he's shocked, it shows in his eyes so clearly. Hell, she'd been shocked too, especially upon waking up in the pool house.
Bryn's glad for the company at least, and she looks up as he picks up a tentacle then snorts, giving him a bit of a chuckle.]
Ugh, oh god. Don't say that or I'll think about it every time I go to Kuma-ko...

[B raises his eyebrows, looking at Bryn and speaking with absolute and complete certainty, the same kind of supreme confidence he had when he spoke on simple scientific matters. To B's mind, it was as if she had just stated that water ran uphill and pigs were reptiles.
Children were to be cherished and loved.]
I'm not really a fan of sushi anyways...
Reply
Thanks. I totally agree...Think I'll just have to come up with a new family name for myself.
[She exhaled and continued scraping.]
As for sushi, you're totally missing out. The bears make great stuff...don't get me wrong, I'd prefer venison or beef any day but...yeah. Sushi's good.

[B offered. He could tell she was smiling behind her mask and he leaned over, gave her a gentle bump with his shoulder.]
Then you'd have a real name, not the one your parents called their genetic line.
[Scrape, scrape, plop into the bucket. With Bryn this was almost fun.]
Maybe I'll give it another shot. Just... raw food. Makes me queasy.
