Well, That Could Have Gone Better 018

I'm really sorry, but we have to put off Decantation Day celebrations because I have a lot of work. I'm sorry! We'll do it as soon as everything's finished!

[Locked to Crew // UnhackableOkay, uhm, I don't know who the previous mechanic was? But they didn't keep the feedwater sparger of Liquid Metal Reactor 013 in good repair and so when I went to ( Read more... )

the captain is a great man, i love fixing things, i can do this, fixing things is awesome, nukes yay!!!!

How lethal is two hundred Sieverts, mechanic?

Well, uhm. It'd give you a lethal dose pretty much instantly? And then depending on how tough your body and genetics are... uhm. You'd live... you know. Probably twelve hours? But you'd be blind. And crazy. Uhm, it's best if you just stay away, sorry.

What the hell are you doing that's released that much radiation?

[He sounds nervous.]

We're just talking in conjecture! Theoreticals! Nothing at all!

Stop. You're terrible at lying.

Who's lying, Makotokusanagi?

[Nervous laughter.]

[She's not buying, B.]

You are.

What the hell happened and what are you doing about it?

I'm dealing with it right now. Passengers don't need to worry, I'm fixing it as we speak!

Oh? Because where I come from, from 200 Sv is worrisome no matter how quickly the leak is contained.

Yeah, uhm, I don't mean to be rude, but most of you guys come from worlds that are primitive shitholes.

[Yeah, she had kind of noticed that herself.

But still.]

Humor me, then. My spinal batteries would only generate a few dozen Sv even in the theoretically-unlikely case of a total meltdown. My primitive mind is having trouble imaging a scenario that generates an order of magnitude more than that and doesn't involve a containment leak.

[That was maybe a little too coldly delivered for sarcasm.]

[B raises his eyebrows. Okay, maybe her world isn't a totally primitive shithole?]

Okay, so you know basic theory. Uhm, basically-- I'm not really allowed to talk about this to passengers? But I guess it'll be okay. Uhm, the previous operator of a reactor down here didn't maintain a hose properly and-- uhm, it's contained.

Wait. Spinal batter? You have a nuclear spine?

[This is Kusanagi's face: O_o

It doesn't make it into her voice.]

That was...sloppy. But as long as the leak is contained.

[She sounds dubious, but knows there's not much to be done in the face of the crew's obstinacy.]

The batteries aren't in the spine. They're next to the base of it because it's a convenient location in a humanoid figure, and near the center of gravity.

[He titters out a laugh.]

We're kinda undercrewed right now? Like, we're running on less than a skeleton so, uhm, mistakes might have happened but they'll be corrected, don't worry!

[B's setting up irradiators as he talks to her and it's possible to hear the clank of metal on metal as he uses magnetic locks to set the devices up.]

That's a good place for them, but what do you do about cooling? Putting it near the lungs would let them act as a radiator, but that'd mess up your balance. Hmmm.

[Dubious Major is still dubious.]

Reactor leaks are a little more severe of a "mistake" than not having enough clean napkins for the breakfast setting.

The surface of my skin acts as a radiator. It has the convenient side effect of keeping my skin temperature similar to human normal.

[No harm in telling him that. It's basic cyborg design.]

The ship is tough, don't worry!

[He continues to set up the devices as they talk.]

That's a good idea. What sort of fuel do you run on? Uranium or plutonium?
