Simon didn't mind it when Darry came to him sometimes. He always liked talking to her, and he was more than happy to be able to help his friend out. So when she draped herself over his Lagann and tapped on the cover, he didn't mind in the slightest.
That did not prepare him for the question that came as he opened it up, however.
"Simon-san... Why are boys so stupid?"
"Why are we so...?" Simon blinked. Had Renton done something strange? Had bro forgotten to put his clothes back on again? No, if it had been that she'd be more red. Gulping, Simon tried to pull out the best thing to say he could. "Well, uh... sometimes we just let our emotions get the better of us, and we act on how we feel without thinking. ... But, uh, we don't mean it when we mess up, we can't help it! ... Um, who the hell do you... think we are?"
His less than half-hearted battle cry, thankfully, got a giggle out of her, instead of a smack to the head, so for that he was happy. In fact, it looked like his words had helped a little.
"Why are you asking me this?" Simon finally asked her. He knew it might not be the best time to ask, sure, but it was confusing him a little.
"Hmm? What do you mean?" Darry gave him a little tilt of her head.
"I know we're friends and all, but... bro would probably be better, or maybe Yoko..." Simon trailed off, looking down at Lagann's controls instead of into his friend's eyes as he had been.
"Simon-san..." Darry sighed and shook her head. "Yoko-san would start talking about how stupid Kamina-san is from the get go, and Kamina-san... ... well he'd be Kamina-san."
"Oh..." Simon seemed to accept this answer, as he was looking back up her and grinning. He felt glad for being able to be so... useful, moreso than he normally was.
"Besides... I'm asking you about boys because, well... you're more of a 'man'. ... About this kind of thing, anyway..." True, it had been Simon in the future who she had looked up to like this, but... Simon was Simon, young or old. She had always known that, from the moment she had met him.
"Wait... Me, a man..." his eyes widened in something that almost looked like fear - but that didn't make sense - as something apparently dawned on him. Before Darry could ask what was wrong, however, Simon had run off yelling apologies and... something about being too much of a pimp already? She must have heard him wrong.
"... Nevermind," Darry sighed and let herself fall to her back and stare at the sky, a bright smile on her face as she watched some birds pass by. "All boys are stupid."
But with Simon, she wouldn't have it any other way.
