[Cadence hears Evie's post from across the room, and lowers his book-Master of the Game, because his mun is a loser-to look at her. They've been together for almost four months, but they haven't discussed Evelyn's past all that much. Cadence marks his page with a napkin (he hates dog-earing) and leans back in his chair, curious.]
[Evelyn's currently curled up on the bed, clinging tightly to a pillow. She looks up and nibbles on her lower lip for a minute, considering how to phrase this. Should she just be blunt, say it like it's nothing?]
She k-k-killed herself when I was three. Slit her wr-wrists in the bathtub.
[Pause. She hates herself a little for talking about it in such an indifferent tone when on the inside it hurts.]
Dad always s-said it was because ... she was never ready f-f-f-for a kid. I don't kn-know, though.
[She sits up, still clinging to the pillow, and just kind of stares at him.]
[His tone is just as indifferent. It's not intentional, mind you; he's just unsure what to feel right now. Cadence could be angry at the dumb bitch for upsetting his girlfriend so much, or he could be sad for Evelyn. The second one seems like a better idea, so he goes with it. Cadence stands up and goes to sit on the side of the bed. He reaches over to pet her hair absently and smiles a little.]
I don't think that was it, so don't beat yourself up.
It's a l-little late to say that when I've b-...been beating myself up about it for the puh-past... fifteen years.
[Evelyn lets out a soft sigh and closes her eyes, relaxing a bit as Cadence pets her hair. It's oddly comforting, and hell, she needs any comfort she can get right now.]
I just...m-miss her. I can't help but wonder h-h-how different things would be between m-me and my dad if my mom was still around, and...I du-...dunno.
[No, no, it's not insensitive. Mrr. Evie pulls him down into a laying position on the bed and snuggles up against him, her head resting on his chest. She likes being able to hear his heartbeat.]
M-...maybe.
[Pause. She lifts her head for a moment to look up at him.]
...Y-you've never said anything about your m-mother ever. The k-king of the world had to come from s-...somewhere.
What happened to your mother?

[Is that insensitive? Sorry, Cadence never had a close relationship with his mother. Or any relationship, really. He was raised entirely by his aunt.]
Maybe your mother will come here.

Pause. Hm, he never really brought up his family life, did he? Cadence thinks for a moment, then shrugs.]
We never had a close relationship.

[He shifts slightly to get more comfortable and says casually,]
She's dead.
