Thing I thought about on a bus ride to an event called "Margarita Club."
Art has layers, categories, and audiences. Some of it has "discourse." Some of it is hard to distinguish from popular culture because of its commercial context. Some of it is solely self-informed. So there's a lot of it. Where do you settle? What context do you want your art seen in, and who are you trying to reach?
If you don't consider this, you might be less financially successful or present your work to an unappreciative audience. Or you might never develop the skills to say what you want to say. (Helps if you know what you might express.)
Factors to consider: your intelligence, financial capacity, charisma and professionalism, and the intensity of your ambition. Freely discard value judgements of high and low art, given that in addition to making an impact or looking smart, you might want to do one or two things besides artmaking.
I wonder where my creative friends want to end up.
angel_boi has played in a number of contexts, so I'd be interested in what he has to say about himself.
