I seek assistance with a purchase. Are you the type of person who enjoys dispensing advice? If so, read on.
1. I want a bicycle.
2. Current ride is borrowed. I want to level up and have my own respectable ride.
3. Have been shopping about a year. Been looking on Craigslist and shit, decided to go to shops.
4. The bicycle will be used for:
- Commute (5mi/day)
- Weekend rides all over the city & bay (probably 10-30mi in a day)
5. I've been specifically shopping for:
- Skinny tires
- Mixte (or step-through) frame
- Big wheels
- Flat bars
- Lightweight (Test: How hard is it to carry up the Civic Center bart stairs?)
Bianchi Monza, $600
KHS Flite 220, $525Pros:
- Light (aluminum frame)
- Step-through design (good for skirts)
- Flat bars (easy posture)
- Super skinny tires
Cons:
- Dislike the blue color (I'd have to paint it to be cute)
- Mixte design means I can't rest it on my shoulder going up stairs
Pros:
- Skinny tires
- Can carry it on my shoulder
- It's cheaper
- Road bikes...do they go faster?
Cons:
- It's no lighter than my current ride, but I can still handle it
- I'd have to paint this one too. I hate decals.
- Drop bars would take some getting used to.
So like...one of these, or keep looking?
Notes: I gave up on Craigslist because I don't have enough time to size myself/set up meetings/get the bike road-ready, and most of the bikes look too heavy. I'm open to being proven wrong. My budget sweet spot was $200-500, but I can be flexible for something good. Also, I don't need a hybrid or mountain bike, because I've got something off-road-compatible coming my way in the fall.
